iPhone users’ long-awaited wish is fulfilled… Apple launches ‘Call Recording’ tomorrow|Dong-A Ilbo

iOS18.1 distributed on the 28th (local time)… Korean call recording/transcription/summary
Apple’s own AI analyzes the call content and even summarizes it
Disadvantages of notifying the other party of call recording

ⓒNewsis The long-cherished wish of domestic iPhone users is expected to be fulfilled. This is because Apple officially supports the call recording function 17 years after the launch of the iPhone.

Apple plans to release iOS 18.1, an operating system equipped with some features of the artificial intelligence (AI) system ‘Apple Intelligence’, on the 28th (local time). iOS 18.1 update is available for iPhone XS and later models.

Korean iPhone users are expected to be able to use Korean call recording, transcription, and summary functions through this update. Korean call recording and transcription were also provided in the beta version of iOS 18.1, which was previously distributed to developers.

To use it, press the call recording button in the upper left corner of the screen during a call. However, unlike Android phones, the other party is automatically notified by voice guidance, “This call will be recorded,” and then recording begins.

The call recording file is saved in the ‘Memo app’, and you can also check the transcription record that transcribes the recording into text. In addition, it does not stop at simple recording, but after the call is over, the converted text of the recording is analyzed and summarized through Apple Intelligence, Apple’s own AI function.

This is the first time that Apple provides a recording service through its own app since the release of the iPhone in 2007. While Android phones such as Samsung Galaxy came with built-in call recording, Apple did not support the call recording function in the name of privacy protection. As on-device AI competition intensifies in the smartphone market, it is interpreted that Apple has found it difficult to ignore functions such as call recording, dictation, and summarization.

The domestic telecommunications industry is also paying attention to the impact of Apple’s official support for iPhone call recording. Telecommunications companies tout the advantage of being able to record calls without the other party knowing, unlike the iPhone.

SK Telecom’s AI agent app ‘Adot’ has secured 5 million cumulative subscribers with call recording and summary functions. On the 15th, SK Telecom reorganized its calling platform ‘T Phone’ service into ‘Adot Phone’ and added the AI function provided by the Adot app.

LG U+ also plans to soon release iPhone call recording ‘Ixio’ using its own sLLM (small language model) Ixigen. Ixio provides call recording and summary, answering instead of calling, visible calling, and real-time voice phishing detection functions.

In addition, the basic functions of Apple Intelligence installed in iOS 18.1 are ▲Writing tool ▲App notification summary ▲Support for writing replies in Messages and Mail apps ▲Clean Up by AI erasing unwanted subjects in the Photos app ▲Creating a ‘memory movie’ in the Photos app Features include ▲Prioritized display of important notifications ▲Improved Siri basic performance.

Apple Intelligence can only be used on iPhone 15 Pro/Pro Max, iPhone 16 series, iPad/MacBook equipped with A17 Pro or M1 or later version chips.

Meanwhile, Apple also introduced the developer beta version of iOS 18.2 on the 24th. What is receiving the most attention in iOS 18.2 is the linkage between Apple’s voice AI ‘Siri’ and OpenAI’s ChatGPT. If you type the command ‘Ask GPT’ in a chat with Siri, you will be immediately connected to Chat GPT. Even if you ask a question in Korean, ChatGPT understands and answers it. The official update to iOS 18.2 is expected to be released in December.
