iPhone Pro: Durability Test Results and Specs Revealed

This year’s iPhone Pro has a titanium frame, thanks to which it was possible to significantly reduce the weight
In the endurance test of the popular YouTuber, he unexpectedly burned down in one discipline
Nevertheless, we can call it durable, as all other tests turned out great

On Friday, Apple started selling new iPhones, so the Internet began to fill with first impressions and all kinds of endurance tests. In the second category, the tests of YouTuber Zack Nelson, who tortures phones with sharp spikes, fire and finally his arms on the YouTube channel JerryRigEverything, have already become popular. How did the latest iPhone 15 Pro Max come out of its traditional torture?

Beware of scratching the frame and bending the entire phone

While virtually all of today’s smartphones are a combination of an aluminum frame and durable Gorilla Glass, this year’s iPhone Pro relies on a titanium frame and its own durable Ceramic Shield glass. This glass proved its quality in the durability test – although the first scratches did appear after contact with a point with hardness 6 according to Mohs, as with competing glasses, these marks were noticeably smaller.

It’s a shame the video maker didn’t put the camera lens through the same test – Apple claims they’re made of sapphire crystal, but we know from previous years that their scratch resistance is comparable to classic glass.

The titanium frame with a blue PVD coating is also prone to scratches. Zack Nelson confirmed that it is no problem to get under this layer and reveal the true shade of titanium. For this reason, it is safest to buy the version in natural titanium color, which has an identical color throughout the depth of the material, and scratches will be less visible on it. It was also shown in a teardown video, which, among other things, also demonstrated a new design with a removable back. The video also revealed that only the frame is titanium, while the interior of the chassis is made of aluminum.

But back to the durability test. The authenticity of the titanium was confirmed by a fire test – titanium turns brown, blue and white after a while. Even the display underwent torture by fire, it escaped without losing a flower. From this part of the test, we are used to temporary or permanent damage to individual pixels, but in the case of the iPhone 15 Pro Max, nothing happened at all.

The test was traditionally concluded with a test of resistance to breakage, in which the latest generations of iPhones survived without difficulty. The surprise was even greater when, shortly after the start of this discipline, there was a crunch of the rear glass and a “spider” appeared over the entire back and the camera module. We don’t know if the new design, which allows the back to be easily replaced, is responsible for this phenomenon, but it seems that the iPhone 15 Pro Max will last less than its predecessor.

Detachable design of the iPhone 15 Pro

This will make it safer to carry the new iPhone in a protective case. On the one hand, you will prevent peeling of the paint on the titanium frame, and you will also add a safety layer to the phone that dampens unwanted stress that could lead to damage to the back glass.
