iPhone Green Dot: What it Means and How to Check if Your Camera or Microphone is Being Used

(MENAFN- Youm7) iPhone owners are now aware of what the green dot on their smartphone screens means. It may seem like it appears randomly – but it is very important and should not be ignored.

Often times you may see a small dot appear on the status bar of your iPhone, which is colored either green or orange, and they both mean completely different things, according to theSun report.

And if you don’t know what it is, it can be confusing — one Reddit thread posted in 2023 asked: “Why does this green dot keep randomly appearing?”

These points were added in 2020 with the iOS 14 upgrade for the iPhone.

It sends a signal when applications access the camera or microphone.

If you see a green dot, the camera is in use by an app.

When an orange dot appears, it means that the microphone is being used.

Sometimes, the microphone may also be active even when only a green camera dot appears.

And if you’re worried when you see it, there’s a helpful trick to checking what’s going on.

One user who responded to the topic wrote: “Open Control Center when the light appears and the app that is using your microphone or camera will appear at the top.”

One user replied: “Awesome. There are a lot of apps that have access to the camera that you definitely don’t need. Thanks.”

Another said: “Thank you I noticed that and had no idea what it meant.”

To open Control Center, swipe down from the top-right corner on iPhones with Face ID, or up from the bottom on models with a Home button.

There are lots of reasons why an app might want to access your camera or microphone.

For example, Instagram may need your camera at certain times, while WhatsApp users must provide their microphone to record voice notes.

But if you’re concerned about an app using your camera or microphone, you can deny access at any time.

Just go to Settings > Privacy & Security, then tap Camera or Microphone.

There you will be able to see the complete list of applications that have requested access to these features.

You can change the permissions for any app in the list, or block it from your microphone, camera, or both.

And if you still think an app is doing something sinister behind the scenes, it’s probably best to delete it.
