There are moments that need to be captured for eternity. The iPhone is ready for use in no time, but then the question arises: photo or video? You can’t do both at the same time. If you’ve decided on a video, you can still extract photos from the video directly on your iPhone afterwards. We’ll show you how to do it.

Without an app: Screenshots
You can also use board resources to create a photo from your video.
Step 1: Find the right moment
Start the video and press pause at the right moment. The selection will be even more precise if you pause the video immediately after starting. In pause mode, move the slider in the video preview to the right position. The preview is located between the video and the controls,

Step 2: Take a screenshot
With a quick tap on the image you hide the controls. Then you take the screenshot. To do this, press the power button on the right and the upper volume button on the left side of your iPhone at the same time. On older iPhones it is the power button and the home button.
Quality note: The screenshot on a 5.4 iPhone 13 Mini is exported as a PNG image with a resolution of 1125x2436px at 72dpi.
With a screenshot you can quickly extract a photo.
Step 3: Remove bars.
Simply remove the black bars using the iPhone’s editing function. To do this, go to “Edit”. The “Crop” mode is preset, so all you have to do is make the frame smaller. You can then save the photo.
You can crop the screenshot on the iPhone
App Number one: Frame Grab
Frame Grab (Link) is a free app that extracts photos in just a few steps. After installation, the application asks for some data usage rights, but you can use it without restrictions even if you do not agree to this.
Here’s how to create a photo from your video:
First, you select the appropriate video – it doesn’t necessarily have to be one you recorded yourself. The app also shows you other videos that are on your iPhone.
You see an overview of your videos
If you click on the desired video, you can move the slider to the desired position and then use the share symbol to send or save the photo.
On the same screen you can search for the position and export the image
Frame Grab is a very good app: no unnecessary steps, no advertising. The only criticism is that the buttons are very small and close together. This could cause difficulties for people with limited eyesight or shaky fingers.
App number two: Video to Pic
Die App „Video to Pic“ (Link) does exactly what its name suggests: it creates a photo from a video.
The app is basically free, but frequent users can take out an ad-free subscription.
To export a photo from your video on the iPhone, open it in the app and select the appropriate frame.
The frame selection is easy thanks to the large slider
Then click on the camera icon and in the next step you can crop, rotate or change the format of the photo.
A few editing functions are also available
If you have not subscribed, you will see an advertisement after clicking on “save” and in the next step you will have the option to save the photo in your library or share it.
The exported photo has a resolution of 1080×1914 at 72dpi on an iPhone Mini. The resolution is therefore slightly lower than that of a screenshot.
There is no real advantage to the app compared to the screenshot. Selecting the image is a little more convenient and removing the bars is no longer an option, but the program keeps you occupied with advertising and tries to sell you a subscription.
The former star: Frame Grabber
Frame Grabber was long the app of choice when it came to creating photos from videos on the iPhone.
However, the app now only offers a three-day trial version and then costs around €20 per year.
Conclusion
Exporting photos from videos always has one clear disadvantage compared to images created directly as photos: the low resolution. Your iPhone records videos in lower resolution. Therefore, the photos extracted from them are not suitable for high-quality printing or viewing on the big screen.
If you want to extract photos from videos, experiment to see what works best for you. A screenshot requires a bit of work, but you can do it with home tools, so it’s the best choice for privacy reasons. If you’re having trouble finding the right frame, an app like Frame Grab can help.
