IPhone Creates New Face ID Feature, Can Recognize Faces Even When Wearing a Mask

Jakarta, CNN Indonesia

Apple is developing a new Face ID feature for devices iPhone. They believe that this feature can allow the system to recognize faces even if the user is wearing it mask.

The Face ID feature is a security feature embedded in iPhone devices. However, the COVID-19 pandemic requires users to wear masks during activities.

This necessity makes using this feature a little inconvenient. In response to this issue, Apple is developing so that later Face ID can detect the user’s face even when wearing a mask or what is called ‘Face ID With a Mask’.

Initial testing of the feature is currently underway on the beta version of iOS 15.4. According to the shared screenshot MacRumors, the security settings section will provide an option whether the user wants to activate the Face ID feature with a mask or not.

The screenshot says the iPhone can recognize a unique feature around the eye area for authentication. However, it is also mentioned that the Face ID feature will work more accurately if it is set to fully recognize faces.

If the user activates the Face ID feature with a mask, then the user needs to re-scan the face.

The Face ID With a Mask feature is also given another additional feature, namely the addition of glasses. With this addition, Face ID will easily recognize the face of users who are wearing masks and glasses.

However, this latest feature seems to require the latest iPhone devices such as the iPhone 12 and iPhone 13 series. Older devices such as the iPhone 11 are said to be unable to use this feature.

Reported from The Verge, Apple has launched several alternative features to help users unlock the screen on their cellphones, one of which is the detection of masks on the user’s face which makes the iPhone device immediately ask passcode instead of trying to detect faces.
