iPhone Alarm Not Working? iOS 17 Feature to Blame, How to Fix it

It is questionable whether your boss will accept the apology, but if you have experienced that the iPhone alarm has not gone off as usual recently, it may actually be Apple’s fault.

Since iOS 17 was introduced last fall, a number of iPhone users have reported problems with the alarm not working as it should. This despite the fact that both the sound is turned to maximum and the alarm is set to repeat.

Several have reported the problem, both in Apple’s discussion forumon Reddit and on TikTok.

– I slept through all my alarms. What’s going on, says Tiktok user Charckaylotte in a video that has gone viral.

Reacts to eye contact

Now, however, it turns out that it may all be related to a feature in iOS 17 called “Attention Aware” – or “Respond to eye contact” as it is called in Norwegian.

The feature uses the front-facing TrueDepth camera to track your eye movements, allowing it to determine whether you’re looking at your iPhone or not and perform various actions based on that.

Basically a nice function, which for example ensures that the screen does not dim when you are actually looking at it.

However, it may also appear to misfire precisely when it comes to alarms.

When you lift the phone to turn off the alarm, it instead assumes you’re awake and mutes the sound alert.

Fixed for now

Despite the fact that the alarm problem has been known for a little while, Apple still doesn’t seem to have come up with a solution. In the meantime, the tip is to disable the eye contact function by doing the following:

  • Go to the Settings app
  • Select Face ID and code
  • Turn the switch off Reacts to eye contact

You can also find it below Settings > Accessibility > Face ID and eye contact.

On Reddit, some users have pointed out that the new Standby mode feature in iOS 17 (Standby) may be the scapegoat for the alarm problem. This turns the iPhone into a smart screen when the phone is charging and placed horizontally. To disable Standby mode, go to Settings > Standby mode and turns the function off.

A final trick can be to delete some alarms if you have too many within the same time period.

In social media, there are several who recommend downloading a third-party app for alarms if this does not solve it. Alarms goes again as a recommendation.
