iPhone 17 could be the first with USB C

Apple has previously said it will switch to using USB-C on future iPhone models following the EU’s decision to force that standardization for charging. However, it could take a long time, until the iPhone 17, which is expected to launch in the fall of 2025, before the change becomes a reality.

Namely, the EU has issued a deadline for when device makers are forced to switch to USB-C for their data and charging ports, and that limit is set at December 27, 2024, and for devices launched earlier of that date can continue to use existing doors and technicians even after December 27 because then it is a product that has already been launched.

If nothing drastic happens, Apple will launch the iPhone 16 under the horse in 2024, i.e. before the EU deadline, which basically means that it’s only the iPhone 17 launched in autumn 2025 that could be the first model to be forced to use usb C.

Apple is rumored to use USB C as early as in its iPhone 15 models, possibly with downgraded support for models other than the Pro models, but there have also been rumors in recent months that Apple is considering launching a fully wireless iPhone which will then include only wireless charging. This was after choosing to launch iPhone 14 models in the US that only supported e-SIM and could not use physical SIM cards.
