Apple today, as expected, presented the world with the new iPhone 16 series. Four new phones, two basic, cheaper ones, and two top-of-the-range, but slightly more expensive ones. Let’s take a closer look at the iPhone 16 and 16 Plus, which received a new design jacket, performance improvements, new side buttons and also smart Apple Intelligence features.
In new design and colors
After 3 years, Apple has again reached for design changes, but again these are more cosmetic changes, especially in the area of the photo module on the back. The new iPhone 16 (Plus) has angular edges, an aluminum body and a glass back with a matte finish.

The rear photo module has shrunk, although it still only offers two cameras, but now it has the shape of a pill and the lenses are placed vertically, i.e. below each other. The LED for illumination is located outside the photomodule. Most of all, the new design resembles the iPhone X from 2017, but with significantly larger lenses.

The color options have also not gone without change: black remains, complemented by white, but also darker blue, green and pink. Compared to last year, yellow was dropped from our offer. We must not forget the new buttons on the side. The action button appeared last year, this year it replaces the hardware switch in basic models as well.

And a complete novelty is the special camera trigger, which has found a place at the bottom of the right side. The button from anywhere in the system starts the camera, you can focus with a quick press, and then press it all the way down to take a photo.

The new button has a tactile haptic surface. With it, you can switch the zoom by moving from left to right and vice versa, or regulate the aperture and intensity of the bokeh effect, for example when taking portraits. It goes without saying that the new button will also be available in third-party applications; at Apple’s press conference, he mentioned Snapchat, for example.
Display and equipment
The display of the new iPhone 16 is available with a 6.1″ diagonal, while the 16 Plus model has a 6.7″ diagonal. Otherwise, it is the same panel as the previous generation, so we are talking about a Super Retina XDR OLED with support for HDR10, Dolby Vision and a brightness of up to 2000 nits, or 1-1000 nits in normal use (without HDR).

The screen has an improved Ceramic Shield cover glass, which is supposed to be 50% more resistant to scratches than the previous generation used in the iPhone 15. Unfortunately, the refresh rate remains low at 60 Hz, and only the iPhone 16 Pro and Pro Max received an increased frequency thanks to ProMotion technology.

Inside the new iPhone 16 and 16 Plus beats the new Apple A18 chipset, specially created for the new generation. The set runs on TSMC’s 3nm architecture and has its own 6-core processor with 4 power saving units and 2 powerful ones. In terms of CPU, it offers a 30% increase in performance compared to the iPhone 15, at the same time up to 40% higher graphics performance.

The iPhone 16 is also said to offer a larger battery. Unfortunately, Apple does not specify the exact battery capacity. It was previously speculated that the basic iPhone 16 will bring a battery with a capacity of 3561 mAh, while the Plus model will have 4006 mAh. The charging speed remains the same, i.e. 15 W via cable and wireless.
Apple Intelligence: we are unlucky in the Czech Republic
The manufacturer also mentioned the news for Apple Intelligence. Although he introduced them back in June, they will now be available for all new iPhones, including the basic two models 16 and 16 Plus. Apple AI is currently only available in the iOS 18.1 beta in US English and for the US.
Apple Intelligence on iPhone 16
From December, Apple Intelligence will also be available in English for Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Great Britain and South Africa. Next year – we don’t know exactly when yet – support for additional languages will arrive, namely French, Japanese, Spanish and Chinese.

Unfortunately for us, Apple Intelligence will not work in the Czech Republic or elsewhere in the European Union for the time being, and the customer will thus be deprived of a relatively large amount of news within the new version of the iOS 18 system.

Camera: improved main and wide angle
It wouldn’t be Apple not to bring at least a partial improvement to the camera as well. The main one has a resolution of 48 Mpx, the secondary one is wide-angle with a resolution of 12 Mpx. In addition, thanks to optical stabilization, the main lens can also provide a 2x lossless zoom with a focal length equivalent to 52 millimeters (for normal photos, it offers a focal length of 26 millimeters).

In addition, the camera set can shoot videos in up to 4K resolution at 60 fps. Pictures and videos taken with the iPhone 16 can be viewed with the Vision Pro glasses on. And at the same time, night shots have been improved – the camera set is said to be able to collect up to 2.6 times more light from the surroundings. There is also a macro mode. The selfie camera has remained the same, it is a 12Mpx sensor supported by a TruDepth camera for unlocking using a 3D face scan.

Price and availability
Both the iPhone 16 and 16 Plus will hit the market next Friday, i.e. September 20, 2024, at the same time, pre-sales will start on Friday, September 13 at 2 p.m. All new products will be available on the first day of sale in the Czech Republic and Slovakia as well.

As for Czech prices, Apple hasn’t changed them by a single crown. The basic iPhone 16 in the 128GB variant starts at CZK 23,990 including VAT, its larger colleague the iPhone 16 Plus with the same storage will be sold from CZK 26,990 including VAT.
