Does this definitively mean that the performance gap between the iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Pro will be closed? I don’t think so. I see two options here. The first is that the Apple A18 will simply be the Apple A17 Pro processor after the name change. MediaTek recently applied a similar policy for its mid-priced systems.
The second possibility assumes that the entire Apple A18 family will be produced using the same technological process. We already know that 3nm lithography is a certainty. I imagine the iPhone 16 Pro would have an advantage with a more powerful NPU/more GPU cores and increased RAM. However, I don’t believe iPhones will ever offer the same performance within a single family.
