iPhone 15 USB-C Connector: EU Regulations and Apple’s Profit-Making Tactics

Apple had no choice, so the iPhone 15 was equipped with a USB-C connector. EU regulations were supposed to make life easier for users and put an end to making money on other solutions, but it seems that the manufacturer found a way to make money anyway. It’s enough… to scare you a little.

The new regulations will require the use of the USB-C connector as the default charging port in all electronic devices sold in the European Union. Apple did not wait before they took effect and that is why we did not see a Lightning port in iPhone 15. This has its advantages but also disadvantages, as Piotr Grabiec wrote:

It is true that it does not support super-fast charging (both Apple and its biggest rival, Samsung, are conservative in this respect compared to the Chinese competition), and the iPhone 15 Pro Max, according to its specifications, charges even slower than the iPhone 14 Pro Max, but it is now compatible with accessories manufactured for Android phones.

This compliance was the goal of EU officials who wanted to “leave the current multitude of chargers in the past.” But now Chinese Apple Store branches have stepped in.

iPhone 15 charged with a regular USB-C cable? The Chinese advise against it

Representatives of local stores suggest not to use other than the official USB-C cables from Apple. According to them, using a cable and charger that you already have and used to charge Android devices may lead to overheating of the iPhone 15. The cause of any problems may be design differences.

We write more about new iPhones on Spider’s Web:

This is not the manufacturer’s official position yet, but such a suggestion has appeared in several Chinese stores, as reported by Western media. Of course, people immediately began to wonder whether this was actually a concern for the equipment itself and its users, or perhaps a clever attempt to promote its own accessories.

After all, a meter-long cable from Apple costs PLN 119

You have to pay the same amount for the USB-C power supply itself. In the case of standard cables, these are rather penny matters, not to mention the fact that many potential iPhone 15 owners may have such a set at home.

Of course, Apple is not the first or only company that would recommend use Only Original Products. We shouldn’t be surprised, although we should wait for the company’s official position and possible recommendations, e.g. for Europe, before we start to suspect Apple of nefarious practices.
