iPhone 15 Series: USB-C Port Issues and Overheating Problems

KOMPAS.com – The iPhone 15 series is the first iPhone to use a USB-C port, after years of Apple maintaining a Lightning port. However, the debut of USB-C on the iPhone 15 series actually creates new problems.

One iPhone 15 Pro user shared his experience on the online forum Reddit. He said that he recharged the iPhone 15 Pro using an Anker branded power bank.

However, after the two devices were connected via USB-C, instead of the iPhone 15 Pro battery being charged, it was the other way around. So, the iPhone 15 Pro is the one that charges the power bank.

The iPhone 15 Pro is supported by the reverse charging feature. This feature allows the iPhone 15 Pro to function as a power bank to charge other devices. Generally devices with smaller batteries. For example, to charge Apple Watch, AirPods or other iPhone models.

However, in the case of a power bank like the one above, it should be the iPhone 15 Pro that is recharged, not the other way around. Because, the power bank has a larger power capacity to share with other devices.

Not only that, there are also reports that the iPhone 15 Pro charges the iPad Pro. Even though the iPad usually has a larger battery than the iPhone.

So far, it is not known why this problem occurred. Apple has also not opened its voice regarding the incident.

However, there is a possibility that this problem can be resolved through a software update that Apple may release in the future, compiled by KompasTekno from Wccftech, Monday (9/10/2023).

Meanwhile, Anker recommends users to charge iPhones from power banks via USB-A ports, not USB-C.

iPhone 15 alami overheat

Apart from problems related to USB-C, a number of users also reported problems with the iPhone 15 overheating.

Some users have experienced overheating problems on the iPhone 15 Pro when the cellphone is used for playing games or just making calls, and when the battery is being recharged.

Initially, the titanium material on the iPhone 15 Pro was thought to be the cause. However, according to Apple, overheating on the iPhone 15 Pro is caused by a bug, not a titanium material problem.

Apart from bugs in iOS 17, Apple also said that increased activity in the background is one of the causes of the iPhone 15 Pro overheating.

According to Apple, a user’s iPhone 15 will feel hotter than usual when the user makes a number of settings or restores data.

Apart from that, Apple also said there are several applications that make the device heat up faster, such as Instagram, Uber, Asphalt 9 games, etc.

Another cause is related to USB-C charging. Charging the battery using an adapter with a power above 20 watts can make the device heat up faster. However, as long as it complies with the USB-C Power Delivery standard, battery charging is still safe to use.

Regarding this problem, users are advised to use a “charging head” aka an adapter with appropriate power.

Due to a number of user complaints, Apple rolled out the iOS 17.0.3 update to address the iPhone 15 Pro overheating issue. Apple released this update on October 5 for the iPhone 15 series and other iPhone models that support iOS 17.

It should be noted that this problem is not experienced by all iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max.

Apple also said that this issue does not pose a security risk to users. Because, when the device temperature heats up more than normal, the iPhone will adjust the temperature to protect the hardware.
