iPhone 15 Pro Black Titanium: Hands-on Review and New Features

The season for iPhone announcements has arrived again this year. As usual, I am at Apple’s headquarters covering a new product announcement event.

The keynote broadcast, which took place late at night Japan time, has ended, and new product releases have also been released. The release details for each product have already been published in the article, so please check them out.

Initially, we will deliver hands-on demonstrations of various new hardware products, including the iPhone 15 and Pro series, as well as the Apple Watch Series 9.

CEO Tim Cook also attended the hands-on venue where the event was held at the Steve Jobs Theater in Apple’s headquarters.“Selfie accusation” from members of the press

“iPhone 15 Pro series” changes significantly with titanium alloy

Among the new products, the one with the biggest changes is the “iPhone 15 Pro” series.

The frame is now made of titanium alloy, and the processor has also been significantly improved.

We’ll check the performance, camera image quality, etc. during the review, but first let’s take a look at the texture.

As you can see in the photo, the frame has a subdued matte texture, and the bezels around the display have also become thinner.

The first thing you notice when you pick it up is how light it is. In terms of numbers, it’s a change of 19 (compared to the iPhone 14 Pro series. The same is true when comparing Max units), but you can clearly see the difference. The reason why it feels lighter than the numbers may be because the corners of the frame have a more rounded finish, and the left and right widths have become slightly thinner, making it easier to hold.

The top-of-the-line iPhone models have continued to get heavier, but the iPhone 15 Pro series has returned to a point where it is lighter than the iPhone 11 Pro/Max released in 2019.

The 15 Pro Max now supports 5x telephoto (equivalent to 120mm), but there is not much difference in the camera department compared to the 3x telephoto 15 Pro.

Another feature of the Pro series is the use of an “action button.”

“Action button” (top) prepared on the left side of iPhone 15 Pro.This is where the switch to mute mode used to be.

It is installed as a replacement for the previous “silence mode switch”, but of course it is not used only for muting the sound.

By default, it switches between incoming call mode and silent mode, but it can also be used to activate the camera, voice memo, translation, etc. It is treated as an “action” button that can be used to quickly call up frequently used functions at any time.

Regarding the camera, it not only supports starting the camera app, but also supports starting in a specific mode such as “still image, video, or portrait mode.”

There is an item related to action buttons in “Settings”, and the functions can be swapped. The UI also feels a little different from other setting items.

The “iPhone 15” series has a moist texture and is easy to hold.Dynamic Island too

The “iPhone 15” series, which can be said to be a standard model, is once again divided into two sizes: 15 and “15 Plus.”

Although it’s not as flashy as a titanium alloy, the finish feels quite different compared to the iPhone 14.

There are five different colors available, but all of them have very calm colors, with the color appearing on the other side of the frosted glass that has been treated to have a moist texture.

Unlike the Pro, it has an aluminum frame, but the finished corners of this one also make it easier to fit in your hand.

Another big change in the 15 series is that the notch in the notification area of the display has been replaced with a “dynamic island.”

iPhone 15 Plus display. The same “dynamic island” as the Pro series is on the top.

The dynamic island was adopted from last year’s model “iPhone 14 Pro series,” but the one installed in the iPhone 15 series is functionally exactly the same. As the number of adopted models increases, we can expect more support from the app side.

Finally, to USB-C. “MFi certification” is not adopted

And of course, I think what many people are concerned about this time is the transition to USB Type-C as an interface.

The position of the terminal has been changed from the conventional Lightning terminal to USB Type-C. It’s a simple change.

USB-C terminal of iPhone 15 (blue) USB-C terminal of iPhone 15 Pro (white titanium)

However, the iPhone 15 series supports up to USB 2.0, so the transfer speed is up to 480Mbps. On the other hand, the 15 Pro series is “USB 3.0”, so the maximum speed is 10Gbps.

Although I wasn’t able to check the actual product, both models come with the same USB-C cable and are said to be “USB 2.0 compatible.” Therefore, those who require high-speed transfer with the 15 Pro series will need to prepare a third-party “USB 3.0 compatible cable”.

The key point here is that the cable you prepare does not have to be certified by Apple.

In the case of the iPhone, the basic rule is to use peripherals that have passed a certification called “Made for iPhone (MFi)” that complies with Apple’s technical standards, and Lightning cables have always come with MFi.

However, with the transition to USB Type-C, USB Type-C cables no longer have special certifications like MFi. This is similar to the lack of certification for USB Type-C interfaces for Macs and iPads.

The camera UI has also become more convenient.

Another difference other than the appearance is the evolution of the camera app. The quality of portrait mode has improved and it has become easier to operate. This is used throughout the iPhone 15.

There are two main changes.

First of all, the place to focus can be changed later. You can now “re-specify” where you want to focus and blur others by tapping anywhere on the screen. You can use the UI to change the F value as usual, but it’s easier and easier to understand by tapping on the point you want to focus on.

Tap anywhere on the screen to adjust the focus (square area) and change the blur area.

The second thing is that there is no need to change to portrait mode before shooting. The mode itself exists, but when you take a picture with the “Photo” setting and then “Edit” it from the app, you can change it to a portrait photo with blur. Every photo you take has depth information, so you can change it to your liking after the photo is taken.

By pressing the “PORTRAIT” button after shooting in “Photo” mode, you can make the same adjustments as when shooting in portrait mode.

The simplicity of this area is also attractive.

Apple Watch focuses on “double tap”

This time, in addition to the iPhone, new Apple Watch products were also announced.

「Apple Watch Series 9」

In particular, a major change is that the Apple Watch Series 9 and Apple Watch Ultra 2 are equipped with a new processor, the S9.

You may be wondering, “What’s the performance of a watch?”, but the “double tap” gesture that will be included in the October update is a UI that takes advantage of improved machine learning performance.

Please watch the video first.

“Double tap” operation with index finger and thumb

You can operate the screen by clicking your index finger and thumb together without touching the screen. It can also be used to initiate calls and snooze alarms.

It detects the small vibrations of the wrist when the fingers are pressed together, and of course requires advanced machine learning processing. In addition, the band must be wrapped tightly around the wrist so that vibrations can be detected properly.

It’s a shame that it only works on models equipped with S9, but the operation is very simple and seems to be highly effective.
