After years of refusing to part with the Lightning port, Apple may have finally given in.
If you own an iPhone, you might be one of the people who would like to no longer have to use several different chargers for their devices. Until now, however, Apple has always refused to put a USB-C port on its smartphones, and we had to put up with the Lightning port. A student recently demonstrated a fully functional project where he replaced the Lightning port with a USB-C port. Unfortunately, the price of the prototype, auctioned for € 85,000, may discourage more than one.
For ordinary people, an iPhone with a USB-C port is therefore totally out of reach… for now. Rumors are circulating about a possible arrival of USB-C ports on the next iPhone 14 Pro and 14 Pro Max. According to the site iDropNews, several anonymous sources would have confided that Apple would consider replacing the port of the next high-end iPhone.
Current smartphones have more and more storage and handle ever larger files. Lightning ports severely limit transfer speeds. As an example, a 4K file in an unedited format weighing 720 GB, will take almost 3:45 to transfer. If the same transfer is performed by USB-C, this time drops to 3 minutes. We therefore understand the insistence of some users to see Apple abandon the Lightning port.
If Apple is considering changing its Lightning port, it is not to please its consumers, but because the company is under a lot of pressure from governments to abandon this proprietary format. A draft European directive for the generalization of USB-C on all devices wants in particular to force the Cupertino company to change port for 2024. Anyway, we will probably have to wait many less before knowing whether this rumor is valid or not.
