IPhone 13 rumored to adopt LTPO display technology again with 120Hz support

Later this year, Apple is expected to follow its annual refresh schedule and launch new iPhones. And rumor has it that Apple might (finally?) Adopt a screen with a high refresh rate. And of course, a new report echoes that.

The last one comes from L’Elec, which indicates that Apple will indeed adopt LTPO display technology for the iPhone 13 line. Previous rumors have said the same thing. However, the main change in this regard is that Apple will not be using LG for the new displays. Instead, Apple will build on Samsung’s manufacturing prowess to integrate the new displays into future iPhone models.

The report says Samsung will supply the display units to Apple soon enough. To do so, however, the company will need to transition its dedicated Apple OLED line to new display technology, switching to low-temperature polycrystalline oxide, or LTPO. This should happen in the first half of this year.

According to the report:

Samsung Display will convert its dedicated OLED line for its largest customer Apple into a line that manufactures low-temperature polycrystalline oxide (LTPO) thin-film transistors (TFTs) in the first half of 2021, according to the research firm of UBI Research market.

Apple is no stranger to LTPO display technology. He has already adopted it for the Apple Watch range. The main bonus for the switch? Even less power consumption than an OLED screen. Additionally, Apple can finally adopt the ProMotion display feature, bringing a 120Hz refresh rate to its iPhone lineup. This is obviously one of the most requested features so far, so Apple is definitely hitting the “about time” button on this one.

If Apple really does.

Now is the time to add that one of the latest rumors regarding the adoption of LTPO display technology is that Apple may be limiting its availability. According to analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, Apple will use this specific change in the two high-end models of the iPhone 13 – hence the iPhone 13 Pro and the iPhone 13 Pro Max.

We’ll have to wait and see how it all turns out. Are you excited for Apple to take this path?
