iPhone 13: details of the four models

Apple’s new smartphone has arrived in stores. And unlike its predecessor, released in two stages last year, it is this time in all its forms that it has been available since Friday, September 24: you can now order the iPhone 13, the iPhone 13 mini, the iPhone 13 Pro like the iPhone 13 Pro Max on the SFR store. All you have to do is choose the one you prefer … To help you, here are the characteristics of the entire range.

It was the small high-tech event of the start of the school year, and you certainly did not escape it: during a traditional Keynote organized on September 14, Apple lifted the veil on its new iPhones. This year again, there are four of them. Like the iPhone 12, the latest from the Apple brand is in fact available as follows: iPhone 13, iPhone 13 mini, iPhone 13 Pro and iPhone 13 Pro Max. And if they display a real resemblance to their predecessors, they still present pretty new features. While they have just arrived on the shelves, all together, last Friday, let’s take stock of what they have in common and what sets them apart, by going through their respective technical sheets.

Design

In terms of appearance, if just like their big brothers they sport the same sumptuous flat metallic edges as the previous generation, it is the iPhone 13 and iPhone 13 mini that stand out the most from their predecessors. For good reason, at the back, their dual camera is no longer arranged vertically but diagonally. And this is not to displease us… We will come back to the photo characteristics in more detail, of course, but let’s continue with the design of the range first. The iPhone 13 and the iPhone 13 mini are both offered in 5 pretty colors: a white “starlight”, a black “midnight”, a traditional red “(PRODUCT) RED” resulting from a partnership aiming to collect fund for the fight against AIDS, a slightly lighter blue than that of iPhone 12, as well as a new pastel pink. The iPhone 13 Pro and the iPhone 13 Pro Max have more premium colors, naturally: gold, silver, graphite, and a brand new alpine blue.

Then at the front, surprise: although they display the same diagonals as their predecessors, i.e. 5.4 inches for the iPhone 13 mini, 6.1 inches for the iPhone 13 and the iPhone 13 Pro, 6, 7 inches for the iPhone 13 Pro Max, their display surface is a little larger… Because Apple has (finally) succeeded in shrinking its TrueDepth camera system, by no less than 20%, while of course retaining its famous Face ID facial recognition technology. Protection level, the new smartphones from the Apple brand once again benefit from Ceramic Shield technology on the front, while the back is made of aluminum “aerospace grade“on the classic and mini models, against surgical stainless steel on the Pro models. All have obtained the IP68 rating of resistance to dust and water, can be submerged up to 6 meters deep for up to 30 minutes But we do not recommend it, all the same …

Performance

Now, let’s go into the details of the technical sheet. By specifying first that the iPhone 13 and the iPhone 13 mini on the one hand, then the iPhone 13 Pro and the iPhone 13 Pro Max on the other hand have almost identical characteristics, if not so for their size. This results in a small difference in the battery level: on the one hand, therefore, that of the iPhone 13 displays an autonomy allowing up to 19 hours of video playback, while that of the iPhone 13 mini is limited to 17 hours, and on the other hand, that of the iPhone 13 Pro can hold up to 22 hours of video playback, while that of the iPhone 13 Pro Max displays an amazing battery life of 28 hours in these conditions. . Overall, battery life is better across the range, which is also equipped with Apple’s new in-house chip, the A15 Bionic, which is more efficient than ever. Note that it is even more so on the Pro versions, where it includes a 5-core GPU (graphics processor), against a 4-core GPU on the classic and mini models. This may be a detail for you, but for the iPhone it means a lot …

On the screen side, while the iPhone 13 and iPhone 13 mini are already innovating with their improved Super Retina XDR OLED panel, 28% brighter than their predecessors, it is on the professional models that the small revolution takes place. The iPhone 13 Pro and the iPhone 13 Pro Max, even brighter than their little brothers, benefit (finally) from the ProMotion technology introduced on the iPad, with an adaptive refresh rate, varying from 10 Hz up to 120 Hz as needed. What make them more responsive than ever to the slightest touch gestures. While the entire range is also compatible with 5G of course, and MagSafe technology as well, one of the big novelties is also in the internal memory. For the first time, the iPhone 13 and iPhone 13 mini have at least 128 GB of storage (against 64 GB previously), with a new version equipped with a space of 512 GB, just that. As for the iPhone 13 Pro and iPhone 13 Pro Max, they also offer a brand new XXL version, 1 TB, in addition to the usual 128 GB, 256 GB or 512 GB.

Photo and video

We’ve saved the best for last. Because this is undoubtedly where the new iPhones will make the most difference in your eyes compared to their predecessors. The whole range benefits from improved cameras, and as we said above, it shows. The main sensor, the wide-angle, is larger than ever with pixels of 1.7 µm (micrometer) on the iPhone 13 and iPhone 13 mini, and 1.9 µm on the Pro models. What offer a sharper and brighter rendering even in low light conditions, with an amazing result especially in Night Mode. But that’s not all, far from it. While the latter is now available on all the lenses of the iPhone 13 Pro and iPhone 13 Pro Max, even on their telephoto lens which also has a better optical zoom (3x), their little brothers benefit for the first time from the Apple’s own system of optical image stabilization by moving the sensor. This greatly reduces the risk of motion blur and therefore gives better photos.

The ultra-wide-angle camera has also been reviewed throughout the series, including on the Pro models an autofocus system. Knowing that on the iPhone 13 Pro and the iPhone 13 Pro Max it also benefits from a larger aperture (f / 1.8 against f / 2.4 on the iPhone 12 Pro), this makes it possible to obtain sharper, brighter ultra-wide-angle photos, with an improvement of no less than 92% in low-light conditions according to Apple. Above all, coupled with advanced software processing, this new ultra-wide-angle sensor, capable of focusing even when approaching up to 2 centimeters from the subject, introduces the possibility of taking macro photos on the iPhone. And the result is striking …

While all these improvements also make it possible to achieve breathtaking videos, especially in 4K HDR, let us finally note two new features available on all the new iPhone 13. The first is called “Photographic Styles”, and it invites you to predefine settings preferences in order to take more or less contrasted photos, bright, hot or cold… The advantage over a filter? This feature is intended to be intelligent, applying the adjustments only to certain key places of the photo, such as clothes or the leaves of trees, so as not to distort other elements such as the color of the skin or the color of the sky. Interesting, isn’t it? And the other feature, which this time concerns the video, is even more impressive. This is a “Kinematic” mode allowing to switch the focus to play on the depths of fields, with a nice bokeh effect, and thus to focus the attention sometimes on a subject in the foreground, sometimes on another. background. While you can easily change the focus while filming, by simply tapping on the desired location on the screen, it is also possible to change it even after the film has been recorded … A real magic trick made possible by the all-powerful A15 Bionic chip, which will allow you to take yourself for Spielberg with the iPhone 13 Pro!
