Apple is about to announce four iPhone 12 models. With a new design, more powerful hardware, a better camera and 5G support.
For months now, Apple fans have been eagerly awaiting the unveiling of the new one iPhone 12 series. For a moment it was thought that the four models would be announced in September. During the September keynote, however, it remained with the introduction of the Apple Watch 6, of Watch SE, of iPad 2020 and the iPad Air 2020. Now Apple has announced the date on which the iPhone event, called ‘Hi, Speed’, will take place. Upcoming Tuesday, October 13, 2020, Apple will host a digital event that will be live streamed.

Four new iPhone 12 models are expected during the event: 2 standard models and 2 Pro variants. All new Apple smartphones will be powered by the new and extremely powerful and lightning-fast A14 Bionic chip, all models are also likely to have 5G. They are the first iPhone models that support the super-fast 5G mobile network. The event slogan ‘Hi, Speed’ therefore seems to refer to 5G and the A14 Bionic processor.
Apple iPhone 12 mini will be the cheapest model
Last year, Apple released three more models within the iPhone 11 series. The fourth, all-new model will be the smallest iPhone in the 12 series. There is still some uncertainty about the name of this mobile phone, online it is often referred to as iPhone 12 mini. This smartphone will build on the iPhone 8. It will not only be the smallest, but also the cheapest addition of the four.
The mini is probably equipped with a 5.4-inch OLED display. Incidentally, this is still significantly bigger than it iPhone SE 2020 model that Apple released in April this year – this device has a 4.7 ″ screen. The success of the SE series would have prompted Apple to introduce a smaller model within the advanced 12 series as well.
The iPhone 12 mini will probably be equipped with a dual camera, comparable to the standard iPhone 12 5G. Differences between these two models will therefore mainly be found in the display size. The standard model will most likely have a 6.1 ″ OLED display. It is the first time that Apple also provides this model with an OLED screen. Last year, only the Pro models were equipped with an OLED display, the standard model got an LCD display.
iPhone 12 Pro Max will be the new top model
Unlike the previously mentioned models, the iPhone 12 Pro and iPhone 12 Pro Max will have a stainless steel housing, instead of aluminum. The Pro will have the same screen size as the standard model (6.1 ″), the Pro Max will be the largest model with its 6.7 ″ display.
It remains unclear whether Apple is also able to give the screens a 120Hz refresh rate, as has been used by many other smartphone manufacturers in recent months. According to rumors, Apple would be short of driver ICs, making it necessary to choose 60Hz screens this year as well.
The iPhone 12 Pro and Pro Max will have more RAM (6GB instead of 4GB) and the camera system will also look significantly more advanced – compared to the standard models. The two Pro models are said to have a quad camera with 3x telephoto zoom and a ToF sensor. The LiDAR scanner would also be found in the two iPhone 12 Pro models – earlier this year this 3D camera was first implemented in the iPad Pro 2020.
No charger included?
There have been rumors for some time that Apple intends not to include a charger with the new smartphones. The recently introduced Watch 6 does not include a charger either. Apple states the following about this: “As part of our efforts to reduce the environmental impact of our products, Apple Watch does not include an AC adapter. Use the copy you already have or add one to your order. ”
As far as I am concerned, this is an undesirable development, mainly intended to attract more money from the consumer. The selling price of the device will only become slightly cheaper, so that you will undoubtedly be more expensive if you purchase the charger as an optional accessory. And yes, of course I want a charger with my new phone: the fastest possible! I’m not going to use an old slow charger for my new fast phone. But nothing is certain of course, perhaps the iPhone 12 models will be delivered with a charger.
iPhone 12 5G prices
In the Netherlands, the new iPhone 5G models will probably receive the following from prices:
• iPhone 12 mini (64GB) price: € 810
• iPhone 12 (64GB) price: € 860
• iPhone 12 Pro (128GB) price: € 1,160
• iPhone 12 Pro Max (128GB) price: € 1,260
The Apple iPhone 12 Hi, Speed event will take place on Tuesday, October 13 at 10 AM PDT – that is, 7 PM Dutch time. The revelations will be followed via a live stream. It will probably be possible to place a preorder for the new models shortly after the introduction.
