Apple has reportedly announced that owners of the first-generation 12.9-inch iPad Pro and 9.7-inch iPad Pro will not be able to use iPadOS 17. This compatibility issue has been corroborated by an internal source at Apple. The fifth-generation iPad and first-generation iPad Pro models will remain on iPadOS 16. The reason for this change is because the iPad uses an A9 chip, while iPad Pro models use an A9X chip, and the latter has not been supported by iPadOS. This is in line with Apple’s usual practice of dropping support for models in order to accommodate new features. However, even if owners of these devices cannot use iPadOS 17, they can still receive updates for security purposes. Despite this news, it is still possible that Apple may change its mind regarding which models get supported when it unveils new hardware at its WWDC 2023 event.
