iPad 11: What we want to see

The iPad 11 is late, given that the most recent model – the iPad 10.9 (2022) – was launched in March 2022. But while it’s possible that it will be unveiled alongside the iPhone 16 on September 9, we don’t expect it.

Unfortunately, while previous leaks suggested a 2024 launch, it now seems very possible that the iPad 11 won’t hit shelves until 2025.

Despite the age of the current model, it remains one of the best tablets money can buy, but we’re excited to see what’s next, and we also have a wish list for the next tablet.

The essentials in brief

  • What is this ? The next entry-level iPad
  • When will it be released? Maybe late 2024 or early 2025
  • How much will it cost? Probably around €589

iPad 11: Release date and price

The first iPad 2024 release date leak we heard suggested it would arrive in June 2024, while elsewhere we heard the iPad 11 would arrive in March, and obviously, neither of those things happened. The iPad 11 didn’t launch at the same time as the iPad Pro (2024) or iPad Air 6.

So when will we see the iPad 11? Apple is holding an event on September 9, and that may be where it will be unveiled, although leaks suggest we won’t see any new tablets at that event, with the iPhone 16 series expected to be the star of that show.

If not, we’ve learned from another reliable source that the iPad 11 won’t enter mass production until the second half of 2024. Another tipster suggested the same launch window, with tipster Mark Gurman saying that the iPad 11 “won’t arrive until the end of the year at the earliest.”

More recently, we heard that Apple could launch a new entry-level Magic Keyboard in the first half of 2025. This keyboard could be compatible with the iPad 11, so it would make sense for both devices to launch at the same time.

We don’t know how much the iPad 2024 will cost, but its starting price could be similar to that of the iPad 10.9 (2022), which starts at €589. But that tablet cost more than its predecessor, so it’s possible that Apple will increase the price further.

iPad 11 News and Leaks

There aren’t many leaks about this tablet yet, but we’ve heard from multiple sources that the 2024 iPad will simply offer “spec updates,” which suggests it will be a minor refresh, likely with a new chipset but the same design and 10.9-inch display again.

Indeed, given that Apple increased the screen size and changed the design of the iPad 10.9 (2022), we can expect both of these elements to remain unchanged for the upcoming model, meaning that a 10.9-inch screen and a design similar to that of the iPad Air are both likely.

However, based on the leak above, we think it will almost certainly feature a new chipset. The current iPad uses Apple’s A14 Bionic, which is also found in the iPhone 12 lineup and the fourth-generation iPad Air from 2020. So the next model should get an upgrade to, at least, the A15 Bionic from the iPhone 13.

What we want to see

As good as the iPad 10.9 (2022) is, it can always be improved. So we hope the new iPad 11 will include some of the following changes and updates.

1. Apple Pencil 2 support

One of the more unusual things about the iPad 10.9 (2022) is that it supports the original Apple Pencil rather than the newer Apple Pencil 2. That’s despite the move to a USB-C port, which means you can’t even charge the Apple Pencil (which charges via Lightning) without an adapter.

There are reasons for this decision, but it seems like a mistake overall, and one we hope Apple will correct for the next model.

2. A drop in prices, or at least an absence of price increases

Apple has significantly increased the price of the iPad 10.9 (2022) compared to its predecessor. For the next model, we would ideally like to see the price drop, given that it is the company’s cheapest tablet lineup. For the next model, we would therefore like to see the price drop, given that it is the company’s cheapest tablet lineup.

3. A less reflective screen

While we were largely satisfied with the iPad 10.9 (2022)’s display, one issue we noted during our review was the lack of anti-glare coating, which results in a lot of reflections, especially outdoors.

We don’t expect Apple to switch to a mini-LED or OLED display, or for there to be more pixels on the new 11th-gen iPad, but we’d at least like to be able to use it comfortably outdoors, so we hope this model will feature that coating.

4. More shooting modes

Cameras are rarely a priority for tablets, and that’s certainly the case with the iPad 10.9 (2022). That’s mostly fine with us, but the absence of Portrait mode and Cinematic mode is noticeable and disappointing, and we’d like to see them included in the new 2024 iPad.

5. Improved battery life

The iPad 10.9 (2022) has a decent battery life, with our tester managing to last between 8 and 10 hours of constant use. That’s in the same ballpark as most other iPads, but considering the MacBook Air (M2, 2022) lasted over 16 hours in our tests, we think Apple could do better, given that a tablet is not far from a laptop.

Even a few extra hours would make a world of difference, so we hope Apple focuses on this for its next model, as it could help secure the 2024 iPad’s place among the best iPads.
