iOS 17 Public Beta: NameDrop, Interactive Desktop Widgets, and More

We’ve passed the first public beta of iOS 17, here are the biggest news
NameDrop and interactive desktop widgets are definitely worth mentioning
An unusual novelty is Quiet mode, a special iPhone interface when charging vertically

As of yesterday evening, the first public beta version of iOS 17 is available to all users. The more curious individuals got their hands on iOS 17 several months in advance, specifically as part of the developer beta version. The more cautious have the opportunity to taste iOS 17 for their own senses only now. What new features do we definitely recommend you try?

AirDrop a NameDrop

The news within the AirDrop feature may seem like the biggest gimmick, nonsense, but damn interestingly worked out. AirDrop is certainly used by most users to send files, photos or links. But in iOS 17, you can send the desired files just by holding one iPhone to the other. One would almost like to say: the infrared time is back!

NameDrop for easy transfer of AirDrop contacts will now also work over data transfers

And in addition to “touching two iPhones” to send regular files like AirDrop, you can also hand over your own business card. You usually edit this in the Contacts application and it contains your photo, phone number, e-mail, but also your work or home address or date of birth.

Postcard when calling

In the new iOS 17, you can also design your own caller ID. Apple calls it Postcard, and it’s actually a screen that pops up on the phone of the person you’re calling. This makes it unnecessary for you to save photos of all your contacts. On the contrary, it is enough if the contact creates a unique Postcard and as soon as he calls you, you will know 100% who it is.

The first public beta has a bit of trouble with this feature, it doesn’t work perfectly. From our testing of the developer beta version, where a number of bugs have already been fixed, we can confirm trouble-free stability. But beware, it only works among users of the Apple ecosystem.

Interactive widgets

Widgets are a big topic for Apple. He resisted them for a long time, Android was much more universal in this regard. However, since iOS 14, Apple-style widgets are available on the desktop, and since iOS 16 even on the lock screen and within the Always-on view.

And the new version of iOS 17 takes widgets a step further. You can hang interactive widgets on your desktop that react to being pressed. This is, for example, a Widget of the Reminders application, or an Apple Music widget. Unfortunately, simply controlling playback from the widget is still not possible.

Rest mode

Standby mode, or as Apple calls it in Czech: Klidový mode, is a rather interesting function that turns your iPhone into a smart display while it is charging. Just activate Sleep mode in the settings and then place the iPhone on the wireless charger in a landscape position.

Idle Mode in iOS 17 More examples of Idle Mode

In this interface, the iPhone can display the clock, date, stocks, weather, interactive reminders, photos or even a calendar and daily schedule. As part of your own customization, you can have any desktop widget light up on the locked screen. Very handy and impressive, although everyone will have to evaluate the level of usability for themselves.

New features in iMessage

The popular iMessage chat app, which is still only available within Apple’s ecosystem, has received a nice batch of new features. The interface of the text field is now simpler, because all the items have been removed to the context menu. After clicking on “+”, the camera, photo gallery, stickers, voice message, sending location and other functions will become available.

Surprisingly, even Apple Cash, a simple payment service through which you can send any amount to your contacts in a few clicks. Although the function is in the beta version of iOS 17, it is obviously not made available for the Czech region, and at the moment we can only wait for the function introduced in 2017 to reach us as well.
