The resource 9to5Mac found hints in iOS 17.2 beta 2 that Apple will allow downloading of applications not from the App Store.
This version of the operating system features a new Managed App Distribution framework. The publication already has ideas about why it is needed:
While we initially thought this API would be tied to MDM solutions for installing enterprise apps (which is already possible on iOS), it looks like Apple is working on something more significant.
After analyzing the new API, we found that it has an extension endpoint declared in the system, which means that other applications can create extensions of this type. Digging even deeper, we discovered a new, unused permission that gives third-party apps permission to install other apps. In other words, it will allow developers to create their own app stores.

This API has functionality for downloading, installing, and updating applications from external sources. It can check whether an app is compatible with a specific device or version of iOS, something the App Store already does.
And all this could apply to corporate applications, but there is one caveat. The API has regional restrictions. This solution fits perfectly into the concept of downloading programs not from the App Store by decision of the EU (you can limit the function to only the country and the European Union) and does not make any sense for MDM.
In theory, Apple has until March 2024 to integrate the new functionality into iOS and iPadOS. So the release of the new feature should take place before this date. [9to5]
