iOS 16 Lockdown Mode Feature Can Check Israeli NSO Group Spyware

Jakarta, CNN Indonesia

Lockdown Mode features stored on iOS 16 increasingly widely discussed in cyberspace. Lockdown Mode is referred to as an additional feature that can increase the security of the cellphone owner’s data.

iOS 16 itself is rumored to be launched globally in the near future or fall this year. This feature will be available on iOS 16, iPadOS 16, and macOS Ventura.

Apple calls Lockdown Mode an “extreme optional protection for a small number of users who face serious threats targeting digital security and user data.”

Mentioned, so sophisticated, this feature can avoid prying eyes by the NSO Group, a technology company from Israel that makes sophisticated spyware.

Apple knows most iPhone owners will never fall victim to a targeted cyberattack. But Apple wants to provide layered protection, namely Lockdown Mode.

“This mode strengthens the device’s defenses and severely limits certain functions,” the company was quoted as saying BGRThursday (7/7).

The protections Lockdown Mode will offer in iOS 16

– Messages: Most types of message attachments other than images are blocked. Some features, such as link previews, are disabled
– Safari: Certain complex web technologies, such as just-in-time (JIT) JavaScript compilation are disabled unless the user excludes trusted sites from Lockdown Mode
– Apple services: Incoming invitations and service requests, including FaceTime calls, are blocked if the user has never sent a call or request to the initiator before

Apple says they will continue to add new protections to Lockdown Mode over time. There’s also a new category in Apple’s Security Bounty program to reward programmers who find loopholes, to help strengthen the feature.

Rewards given to individuals who can reveal loopholes in Apple’s security, will be rewarded with a maximum of US $ 2 million or Rp. 29 billion.

How to use new features in iOS 16

Once Lockdown Mode is launched, here are the steps you need to take to enable it:

– Open the Settings app on iPhone or iPad or System Settings on Mac
– Tap Privacy & Security
– Scroll to the bottom of the page and tap Lock Mode
– In the next screen, tap Turn On Lock Mode

If you feel you are a potential target for surveillance, it is recommended to activate Lockdown Mode to avoid cyber attacks, quoted by Mac Rumors.
