Apple on Monday unveiled the new version of its iOS 16 operating system for the iPhone. The update, which should be available this fall, includes improvements to the iPhone lock screen with revamped notifications and widgets, improvements to iMessage conversations and changes to the Mail app.
When the – free – update arrives, likely in September if Apple’s previous release schedule is to be believed – a handful of iPhone models currently running iOS 15 will be left behind.
According to a list of compatible devices published on le site preview d’iOS 16 d’Applethe following iPhones are compatible with iOS 16:

- iPhone 13 Pro Max
- iPhone 12
- iPhone 12 mini
- iPhone 12 Pro
- iPhone 12 Pro Max
- iPhone 11
- iPhone 11 Pro
- iPhone 11 Pro Max
- iPhone XS
- iPhone XS Max
- iPhone XR
- iPhone X
- iPhone 8
- iPhone 8 Plus
- iPhone SE (2nd generation or later)
Last year’s list looks nearly identical starting with the iPhone 8 or newer. But this year’s list does not include the iPhone 6 and iPhone 7 models, as well as the original iPhone SE. These three models will be blocked on iOS 15 (and subsequent security updates) as soon as iOS 16 is released.
