IOS 15 and Ipad OS 15 will be launched soon – but without any of the best features

Same thing every year. Apple showcases amazing iOS features at WWDC, then only launches a handful once the operating system is released. We should not be surprised that the same thing happens again with iOS 15. Some of the missing features are large, some are small, but they will inevitably appear in iOS 15.1, iOS 15.2 or later.

We do not have an exact time frame for these “missing” features (Apple rarely publishes such). We only know that we expect them before the end of the year. These are the iOS 15 features that we already know will be missing at launch and that will likely be released in the fall.

Shareplay

This is one of the biggest news in iOS 15, IpadOS 15 and Mac OS Monterey. It lets you use Facetime to watch TV or movies, share your screen, or listen to music with friends. Shareplay keeps playback in sync with your Facetime friends, lets them control playback, and dynamically controls the volume so you can hear each other talk over music or movies.

The problem is that it does not work well. Apple has officially delayed the feature and now says that Shareplay will come in an update after the launch of iOS 15 and Mac OS Monterey. Which is good, it’s more important to get it right from the start than to release a half-baked feature to a billion users, which will undoubtedly create a bad first impression.

Legacy contacts

New in iOS 15 are a couple of features that manage access to your Icloud account. Reset Contacts is a way to appoint a trusted family member or friend (who also has an Apple product) who receives a one-time code from you, which you can then use to access your Apple ID should you forget your password or be locked out. of the. This is a feature that will be available at launch.

Legacy contacts are something else. It’s a feature that lets you specify which contacts will have access to your Icloud data when you die. Given how many of our memories are in the form of pictures and emails, it is an important feature. Legacy contacts were in the iOS 15 beta releases until beta 5, when it disappeared. In the update details, Apple wrote: “Legacy connectors have been removed from iOS & Ipad OS 15 Beta 5 and will return in a future release.”

We’re not sure if Legacy connectors will be available at the launch of iOS 15 or if they will appear in a future update, but we’ll guess later.

App privacy report

Apple has a new way to show how the apps you use share your data. Open Settings, Integrity, then scroll down and activate Record app activity. Your Iphone will now log in every time an app gets access to your microphone, camera, contacts, location and which domains they contact.

All information will generate a report, so you can see exactly how your apps are accessing your potentially private data. Record app activity already exists in iOS 15 Beta, however, the privacy report will not be available until iOS 15 receives its first updates.

The privacy report will tell you when and how often your apps use your location, microphone, camera, contacts and more.

3d-navigering i Carplay

Apple Maps has a new detailed 3D view for big cities like San Francisco, Los Angeles, New York and London (no word on Swedish cities). It shows landmarks and has an appealing appearance.

But if you want to see the new view on your car’s navigation screen, you’ll have to wait. Apple’s iOS 15 website says “Support for Carplay will be in a software update later this year.”

IOS15
3d Maps will only be available for larger cities and will not be available in Carplay until later.

Universal control

Technically, it’s more of an Ipad OS and Mac OS feature, but it’s so cool and interesting that we include this. Universal Control lets you place your Ipad next to your Mac and then move the mouse cursor to the edge of your Mac screen and then see how it slides into your Ipad. Then your mouse / touchpad and keyboard will also work on all devices that use universal control for the moment. You can also move files from one Mac to another this way.

It’s like a wireless keyboard and mouse switch for multiple Macs or iPads. A feature we long to test. But now it’s just that the feature is absent from all the beta versions of Ipad OS 15 and Mac OS Monterey that have been released so far. And there is not much time left before launch. It seems that this is something that will be difficult to achieve properly, and certainly not a feature that will be released for beta testing a week before launch.

Apple has not officially stated that universal control is delayed, but given the relative complexity of the feature and the fact that it has never appeared in any beta version, we consider it fairly safe to assume that it will not to be found in Ipad OS 15 or in the first release of Mac OS Monterey.

Universal control seems amazingly cool.

Icloud email domains

Another feature that has not been officially delayed is the ability to customize your ICloud email with a custom domain name (which you can invite your family to use).

We are not quite sure how this feature will work and it has not appeared in any beta version yet. Like Universal Control, Apple has not said whether this feature is delayed or not, but they have indicated that some new Icloud features will come first in an update. But you can actually configure this feature in Account settings on beta.Icloud.com, but it is not available in any of the beta versions for Monterey.

Apple also recently announced that Icloud Private Relay will be released as a beta when iOS 15 is released. It undeniably sounds as if Icloud + is not really ready for the curtain to open.
