On Monday evening, Apple boss Tim Cook and his team led the two-hour presentation at a rapid pace. There were also important things to announce. The new homescreen with widgets on the iPhone, for example – or that Apple will build its own processors for the Macs in the future. You can read all of this in detail here.
However, many features were only mentioned in passing – or stood on a slide as a keyword for a few seconds. BLICK has downloaded the developer beta version of iOS 14 and started looking for the hidden features. Some are perhaps almost more important in everyday life for most users than the big news.
Knock – and the desired function starts
Hidden in the menu under “Settings / Accessibility / Typing” you can now switch on “Tap on the back”. Here you can set actions that are carried out when you tap the back of the iPhone twice or three times. For example, that a screenshot is taken or the music becomes louder. Unfortunately, you cannot start the camera with it yet. In addition, the function does not seem to work on all models. Knocking is also possible if you have a cover on it.
Translate even without an internet connection
Similar to Google, Apple has integrated its own translation app on the Android devices. This can translate in writing, but also responds to voice input and can itself speak in eleven languages. The highlight: You can also download voice files and then use the service without an internet connection.
Search for emojis with keywords
Where can you find the money bag again? Or the fish on the fish hook? Previously you had to scroll through the emojis to find the right drawing. Now you can easily search for emojis on the Apple keyboard. Type in “fish” and you can see the possible emojis including the sushi symbols.
Smart widget to flip through
You can not only display individual widgets on the homescreen and all other pages – for example, to play podcasts directly or to see calendar entries. No, there is also the so-called «Smart Stack». Here the operating system automatically tries to anticipate what interests you. And you can scroll through different widgets.
Sleep tracking is also possible without an Apple Watch
Of course, sleep can be better monitored if you wear the Apple Watch with all sensors at night. The new sleep functions also only work with the iPhone. And that’s new to find in the Health app. There you not only enter when you normally get up, but also when you want to go to bed. If you want, you can also set the iPhone to remind you – and even reduce the screen time in the night phase. As a gentle reminder that you should really go to bed.
“Where’s at?” App finds more than iPhones
Via the app called “Where’s?” can display his Apple devices from the watch to the iPhone on a map – if you have activated it. And lock in the event of theft.
Other manufacturers can now also have devices integrated into this app. Apple guarantees data encryption. However, such devices still need mobile radio, WLAN or any other location function.
Chat faster and funnier with iMessage
The iMessage Messenger is further upgraded by Apple. This way you can reply to incoming messages directly in a pop-up window. And countless new emojis are built in and can be brought to life. Of course, all this only really makes sense if you communicate with people who also have an iPhone.
Change standards for mail and internet
Up until now, Safari was the browser used on the iPhone for Internet applications. And your own mail program for mail. Now you can adjust it yourself and set up Chrome or Outlook as the default.
iOS 14 also comes on older iPhones
The presentation was still puzzled, now it is clear: iOS 14 comes on the same iPhone models as iOS 13. This means that the iPhone 6S from 2015 will also receive an update, even if it has already been around for five years in autumn . The first generation of the iPhone SE from 2016 is also supported – and of course all newer models.
