Iohannis is in New York for the 78th session of the United Nations General Assembly.
In the intervention at the World Leaders Forum, the head of state was asked about the drones that fell on Romania’s territory.
He recalled that there were three such situations, then added: “Fortunately, so far no one has been injured and no damage has been done, but it does not mean that these incidents do not matter.”
“We discussed with the allies, we strengthened our anti-aircraft defense in the area, to protect our citizens, but still (the situation, no) remains unacceptable, despite the fact that Russia’s intention is not to attack Romania. These drones are not attacking Romania, but as they fall in Romania, this is a real problem that must be solved,” Iohannis said.
“By attacking small ports, Russia wants to endanger the transit of Ukrainian grain”
The president also offered an explanation for the attacks by Russian forces on the small ports on the Ukrainian coast.
“Why is Russia attacking these small ports? By the way, we have a border on the Danube with Ukraine, which is quite long. So why is Russia attacking these small ports? The explanation, in my opinion, is that Russia wants to endanger the transit of Ukrainian grain. From the first, Romania has allowed to export grain to whoever it wants, mainly to less developed countries, and it exports enough”, said the head of state.
The president also spoke about the situation of Romanians on the border with Ukraine, very close to the conflict: “People are scared. If you live in a small village on the banks of the Danube and you see a drone fall near you, you think: maybe the next one will fall on my house”.
