IOC Suspends Russian Membership Due to Violation of Olympic Charter

IOC suspends Russian membership

[Now Sports]The International Olympic Committee issued a statement on Thursday announcing the suspension of the membership of the Russian Olympic Committee, effective immediately. The Russian Olympic Committee unilaterally included the sports governing bodies of the four regions originally under the jurisdiction of Ukraine, namely Donetsk, Luhansk, Kherson and Zaporozhye, as their members, which violated the Olympic Charter” and was therefore revoked by the International Olympic Committee (IOC).

IOC spokesman Mark Adams said in a statement: “The Russian Olympic Committee’s decision to admit four regions to the Olympic Council violates the Olympic Charter and infringes on Ukraine’s territorial integrity. Therefore, membership has been suspended with immediate effect. , until further notice. The Russian Olympic Committee cannot continue to operate as a National Olympic Committee and receive funds from the International Olympic Committee.”

The IOC also added that it would decide at an appropriate time whether Russian athletes can attend next year’s Paris Olympics as neutral athletes. The Russian Olympic Committee responded by claiming that the IOC’s decision was a sanction with obvious political motivations.
