Ioannina shows the way to a healthier future

TH. BEGAS AT THE RAAE AGENDA ON CLIMATE NEUTRAL CITIES

The Conference of the Regulatory Authority for Waste, Energy and Water (RAAEF) on climate neutral cities was held in Thessaloniki with great success.

The Conference was held within the framework of the 2nd International Exhibition of the Circular Economy “Forward Green” and it was attended by Municipalities selected in the framework of the European Mission “100 Climate neutral and smart cities by 2030 from and towards the citizen”.

The municipality of Ioannina was represented by the mayor of Ioannina, Thomas Begas, who addressed a greeting emphasizing, among other things, that the achievement of climate neutrality with a time target of 2030 will be done through the creation of living and resilient cities, through ecosystems of experimentation and innovation and through the mobilization of groups of residents designing “bottom-up” in a transparent and democratic way.

“For the city of Ioannina, our inclusion in this network is an excellent opportunity to compensate for what the country’s economic crisis deprived us of and continue to deprive us of phenomena such as the COVID19 pandemic and climate change. That is, investments, development dynamics, quality public space and public health.

Yes, we are proud to stand here today, part of a network of cities that are setting even higher goals for the green and digital transition.

But it also reminds us how much work we have ahead of us,” said Mr. Begas to conclude: “The green transition is making progress across Europe, however, there is always a need for pioneers. Our cities show the way to a healthier future. We have to support them in this”.

The presence of the municipality of Ioannito at the conference concluded with the mayor’s special advisor, George Antoniou, developing the municipality’s climate pact which, through its two pillars, the Action Plan and the Investment Plan, describes detailing the strategic roadmap bridging the gap between the current greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions inventory and the ambitious 2030 climate neutrality goal.
