Inzaghi vs Sarri: A Rivalry Rewritten

“It’s a team that has put us in difficulty several times in the past.” On the eve of the 3-0 against Lazio, a performance that was much more impressive than the result, Simone Inzaghi spoke like this about the challenge to Maurizio Sarri’s team. One of the coaches against whom the Inter coach has, in fact, often suffered in his career. To be clear, the balance reaches parity only today: six wins each plus a draw in the thirteen matches. Inzaghi’s encounters with Sarri started off uphill: three defeats in the first four, then a substantial alternation. Since he has been at Inter, he has won in Milan and Maurizio in Rome. In this championship, the first sign of a new wind: 2-0 Inter at the Olimpico, the swing broke. In Riyadh, a few minutes ago, the taboo was dispelled: 3-0 and Lazio licking their wounds, while Inter enjoyed themselves in what could seriously be their best version in recent Nerazzurri history. For two games in a row – and it had never happened in the previous eleven – Inzaghi did not concede a goal from the Tuscan: strong indications that the taboo has been dispelled.

It’s official: only Allegri remains. Of the top-ranking coaches, Sarri has always been one of the toughest obstacles for Simone. With Pioli he has been on a positive streak for five games: the issue has been archived for some time now. Ditto Italiano, who overtook him only once in eight crossings; Gasperini fares better, but Inzaghi still wins 8-5 and has never lost against the Dea since he has been at Inter. As for Mazzarri – a hot topic given the next match in the final – the precedents say 4-1 for the Inter coach. With Sarri, it was said, a different story. Now that he has found the key to deciphering the game, only one remains but not just any: Allegri is the only one who, for tactical or psychological reasons, Inzaghi has not yet managed to decipher. He beat him, of course, but never winning and convincing as he did with all his other colleagues. As if that coach so far from the game represents a real nemesis. The last exam to pass.

The long run to February 4th. The current situation, God forbid, is a Super Cup final won and to be won. Trivia: not to be underestimated. Comparing the performances of Inter and Napoli, it would appear to be the only real risk for the former even if everyone knows that this is not the case. The great story of this Italian season, however, is the duel with Juve, which has returned to seriously claim a championship for the first time since the days of Calciopoli. And so Monday also ends up in the cauldron of the match that can decide this championship: yesterday Inter sent yet another message of superiority to Serie A, tomorrow Madama can overtake them in the standings. On February 4th they will find themselves face to face, at what distance in the standings no one knows but it will still be close. The battle of nerves is also part of the challenge between Inzaghi and Allegri, the only one who (perhaps) can still put a team that is currently apparently perfect in difficulty.
