Invitation to the opening of a photo exhibition and talk about dementia in OPEN Delft

On the evening of Monday, September 2 at 8 pm, a photo exhibition about dementia will be opened in OPEN, Vesteplein 100 Delft. This will be on display on the platform wall on the ground floor throughout the month of September.

During the opening, Antoinette van Beurden will give an interactive talk about the most common form of dementia, Alzheimer’s, in which she will share her vision and personal background. This is after the publication of her book “The World of Alzheimer’s”.

Antoinette’s mother had Alzheimer’s disease for 12 years. Through the disease process she has experienced that times are difficult, lonely but also beautiful and disarming. She has shown the terrible process in pottery. Her book contains loving and moving stories and poems guided by ceramic images, with a message of comfort.

After the 25th anniversary of the founding of the Delft-Westland-Oostland Alzheimer region in 2023, the foundation approached several photographers with the question of whether they could give their ideas and experiences a photographic form. with depression. Three photographers have accepted this challenge and their images can now be seen by everyone in OPEN, Delft from 02/09/24 to 01/10/24.

Jan van Frankenhuyzen followed 99-year-old Mieke when she visited his home. In intimate black and white images he introduces the viewer to her and the domestic things she likes.

Jos Vermeij takes the viewer to the care farm. People with dementia live there with little distance to the outside world and can participate in the work on the farm.

For Reinier van der Lingen, it was the damage to the brain that caused dementia to start. His portraits of family members, made on chemically damaged analogue material, show the damaged and altered worldview of someone with dementia.
