Some potential investors in Feyenoord’s new stadium have recently faced threats and intimidation from opponents of Feyenoord City. Well-informed sources confirm this to the regional broadcaster Rhine estuary. Some of these investors would therefore consider leaving the project.
Feyenoord has not yet finalized the financing for the new stadium complex. In addition to the municipality of Rotterdam, it is also the intention that a group of Rotterdam investors will participate in the plan by buying shares. Their contribution would be estimated at 40 million euros.
It is unclear which investors are now considering exiting the project. “We understand the concerns of these investors very well. If even family members are intimidated, that goes way too far. It is logical that you then think a second time whether you still want to participate in this project,” a source told Rijnmond . “But if the stadium is not built for this reason, it will go against any sense of justice,” added another source.
Threats to Town Hall
The Feyenoord supporters are strongly divided about the building plans. Proponents see it as a necessary step for the club, opponents see it mainly as a prestige project of the municipality.
Mayor Ahmed Aboutaleb of Rotterdam drew a line at the beginning of the evening yesterday through the conversation of the city council with Feyenoord. The consultation moments of supporters that were planned later this week are also canceled after threats and intimidation from various parties involved. Threats were also made to the city hall.
Aboutaleb talked about a “very unusual step” which he had to put. He saw no option but to shut down the talks to ensure the safety of councilors and others involved.
On Saturday afternoon, about fifteen supporters sought out supporters of Feyenoord City. For example, they were with the Rotterdam architect Ard Buijsen on the sidewalk. The police had to intervene to keep the peace. Buijsen says that he has often been intimidated and threatened for years.
