Investment in education – rivalry for secondary school – Munich district

After the eagerly awaited meeting of the association for state secondary schools in the southeast of the Munich district on Wednesday evening, the race for an additional secondary school is completely open again. The final decision will not be made until February whether the new building will be built on Brunnthaler Straße at the end of Höhenkirchen-Siegertsbrunn or in the future residential area “Westlich der Bahn” in Hohenbrunn. The school is urgently needed to relieve the high school in Neubiberg, which is bursting at the seams. After there has already been a positive district council decision and approval from the Ministry of Culture for Höhenkirchen, an audit order for the potential Hohenbrunn location has now been initiated.

The adjournment was received positively in both municipalities: “For us it is very good that the Hohenbrunn location is now being seriously examined and that no hasty decision is being made,” said Hohenbrunn councilor Pauline Miller (ÜWG-Free Voters / Citizens’ Forum), who Represents the municipality in the association. There is not much time until February, the planning must now be pushed ahead quickly. “I see the time factor as the only argument in favor of Höhenkirchen, but that cannot be decisive.” For Hohenbrunn, on the other hand, the traffic connection and thus also the sustainability speak: “With the location at the end of the town Höhenkirchen is pushing the children’s taxis, so that parents bring their children to school by car,” says Miller.

Mayor Stefan Straßmair (CSU) argues similarly: “Hohenbrunn is the better solution because of the S-Bahn connection, now we will see whether it is also feasible.” That depends on the one hand on the property owner, who must now agree to a sale in a timely manner, and on the other hand on the approval of the school supervisory authority. Only the fact that too many students – even from the secondary school in Neubiberg – could move to Hohenbrunn is what Straßmair sees as a possible negative aspect: “But the fact that a school could not be fully utilized has not existed for a long time.”

The mayor of Höhenkirchen-Siegertsbrunn (SPD), Mindy Konwitschny (SPD), also welcomes the result of the Wednesday meeting: “Nothing is lost for us, the race is still completely open. But one thing is also clear: if the association wants the school quickly, we have to get on the train come.” But it is quite legitimate to first “see what is possible in Hohenbrunn”.

According to Konwitschny, there are definitely advocates for their municipality as a location among the municipalities: “Apart from the fact that we would like to have the school ourselves, this location would also be good for Aying and Brunnthal.” The southern communities are currently suffering the most from the situation, and some of the children from this area have to attend secondary schools outside the district. “Who knows how long something like this will be possible at all,” says Konwitschny. It would therefore be all the more important for this child if another secondary school in the Munich district went into operation as quickly as possible.

For others, the arguments against the Höhenkirchen-Siegertsbrunn location weigh too heavily. In addition to the fact that the location is on the outskirts, around 900 meters from the S-Bahn station, the main thing is money. The expected expenditures are around 20 million above those with which it was originally calculated. At that time, the association assumed that the secondary school would be built next to the grammar school at Höhenkirchen-Siegertsbrunn station.

Ottobrunn’s mayor Thomas Loderer (CSU) has always spoken out in favor of this location and announced his veto months ago against the area on Brunnthaler Straße. Loderer welcomes Hohenbrunn’s application and now says that it would be “irresponsible” not to consider the alternative. “I would have welcomed the campus solution in Höhenkirchen, but Hohenbrunn is significantly better than Brunnthaler Straße,” says Loderer. The aim must be to ensure the best quality for the students; It must also be taken into account where they come from. “And they don’t come in large numbers from the Brunnthal direction,” says Loderer.
