The body of Alexei Navalny, who died in a penal colony on February 16, has been sent for a chemical examination, which will last 14 days. This was announced on Monday by representatives of the Investigative Committee of Russia to the lawyers and the mother of the Russian opposition figure.
Earlier, forensic expert Olga Fateeva revealed that investigative authorities may not allow the body of the deceased to be handed over to his relatives for years, and such delays are a common practice.
“If the relatives are not allowed to conduct a second examination of the body and
Navalny be quickly buried,
then it is unlikely that after an exhumation it will be possible to determine the cause of death. Even more so after cremation”, says Fateeva. She adds that in the case of poisoning with psychotropic substances, there will be no specific changes in the organs, and the laboratory cannot always determine the presence of poison in the blood because the dose was too small or because the substance has broken down.
According to Olga Fateeva, a secondary examination of Navalny’s body by doctors abroad would be very difficult, because the family must have permission for transportation.
Vladimir Putin’s spokesman, Dmitry Peskov, announced that the question of handing over Navalny’s body was not within the Kremlin’s competence.
“We are not involved in this matter. This is not a function of the presidential administration,” the Kremlin spokesman explained. He added that the investigation into the circumstances surrounding the death of Alexei Navalny “is ongoing, all necessary actions are being taken.”
Navalny’s allies accused the Kremlin of “covering its tracks”, since a few days after his death it is not clear where the body is.
So far, all that has been officially said is that Navalny died of “sudden death syndrome” – a vague term for a range of heart conditions.
“Having killed Alexei,
Putin killed
half
from me
– half of my heart and half of my soul,” announced his widow in a video message. Yulia Navalna, 47, also accused the Kremlin of hiding her husband’s body to allow traces of the poison to disappear. Holding back her tears, she promised to continue her husband’s cause and fight for a free Russia with the help of its citizens.
“I want to live in a free Russia, I want to build a free Russia,” she said.
