Germany, Sweden and Denmark are conducting separate investigations into last year’s September 26 explosions in the Baltic Sea, which destroyed the Nord Stream pipelines. The yacht was detained near the blast site shortly after the blasts.
On Tuesday, investigators from all three countries sent a compiled update to the UN Security Council. The joint letter said traces of underwater explosives were found in samples taken from the yacht during the investigation, raising suspicions that the yacht was used to transport explosives.
At the same time, the joint letter emphasized that none of the investigations have been completed, and it is not yet possible to say when they might be completed, given the unprecedented nature of the acts of sabotage and the complexity of the investigation.
CONTEXT:
On September 27, 2022, Danish and Swedish authorities released information that the day before, damage was detected in the “Nord Stream 1” and “Nord Stream 2” gas pipelines in the Baltic Sea near the island of Bornholm. The damage was discovered in several places at once, and this indicates that what happened is likely to be a sabotage rather than a simple accident. The Swedish prosecutor’s office believes that the explosion of the gas pipeline “Nord Stream” was caused by sabotage.
The “Nord Stream” project was sharply criticized because its opponents believed that it increases the European Union’s dependence on Russian gas supplies and provides Moscow with political leverage as well as tools to potentially cut off energy supplies. Officials of the Baltic States have also criticized “Nord Stream”, stressing that it is a geopolitical project and contradicts the goals of the European Energy Union.
