The Egyptian health authorities are seeking to know the nature of the “mysterious disease” that is spreading in a village in Qena Governorate, in the south of the country, while confirming that the cases are recovering, days after the appearance of some symptoms.
And on Sunday, the Ministry of Health issued a statement saying that it was following up “the complaint related to the emergence of similar symptoms among a number of citizens in the village of Al-Aleqat in Qena Governorate.”
The Ministry stated that the similar symptoms were high temperature, bone pain, and fatigue, and it lasted from three to five days, and they are common symptoms among many common diseases such as cold and influenza, intestinal infections and fever, which spreads in conjunction with high weather temperatures. It goes away with rest, fever reducers, and fluids.
The Undersecretary of the Ministry of Health in Qena Governorate, Raji Tawadros, told Al-Hurra that samples were taken from patients, water and sanitation facilities.
He added, “The nature of the disease has not yet been known. We are awaiting the results of the analyzes that we conducted for some of those who showed symptoms.”
A journalist in Qena Governorate, Hamada Ashour, told Al-Hurra that the disease began to appear in mid-May, among small numbers of villagers, but by the end of last June, the number of cases had increased dramatically, especially among the elderly.
Al-Shorouk newspaper quoted the mayor of the village of Al-Aleqat, Muhammad Al-Naqiri, as saying that the people were surprised by the spread of a disease that causes “heating and broken bones” and has infected dozens of villagers, without knowing the type of disease, and whether it was dengue fever spreading in the Red Sea governorate or another disease and virus. new.
Al-Naqiri added, “After the injury of large numbers of villagers, specifically in Nagaa Sandal, their number reached about 150 people, the Health Directorate sent a large number of medical teams, and samples were taken from patients, mosquitoes, and sewage water for analysis in the Ministry of Health’s laboratories to find out the real reasons behind the spread.” This disease, and as soon as the concerned authorities were notified, medical teams were dispatched and disinfectants were sprayed inside the village.
Regarding what was reported that the disease is dengue fever, Tawadros said that it is difficult to say for sure what the disease or virus is until after the results appear.
And on Tuesday, the Minister of Health, Khaled Abdel-Ghar, visited the village, and said in statements to reporters: “We do not have any concern regarding the transmission of infection or the symptoms becoming serious.”
He added, “At the level of cases that we have seen so far, their symptoms are mild, so that the role of influenza or a cold may sometimes be stronger than what we have seen.”
He continued, “We are following the disease through the preventive medicine sector, and currently all specialties and treatment convoys are present in the village, and they will not move from it until we know that all cases have fully recovered.”
The Assistant Minister of Health for Preventive Medicine, Amr Qandil, confirmed in televised statements that no decision was issued to prevent citizens in the village of Al-Aleqat in Qena Governorate from leaving their homes, indicating that most cases do not require transfer to hospital for treatment.
