Investigation Suggests Surface-to-Air Missile Involvement in Yevgeny Prigojine Plane Crash – Hypothesis Being Tested

This hypothesis is still being tested.

American intelligence services believe that the plane which crashed on Wednesday in Russia and in which the boss of the Wagner group, Yevgeny Prigojine was probably, was shot down by a surface-to-air missile fired from Russian territory, have several US government officials told Reuters.

The sources, who spoke on condition of anonymity due to the sensitivity of the matter, said that this assessment was only at the preliminary stage and was still subject to verification.

A gray cloud characteristic of missiles

A video of the plane crash was shared on the evening of Wednesday August 23. The plane can be seen descending in a spin to the ground before crashing.

As former French naval aviator Xavier Tytelman points out to the magazine Pointseveral signals suggested a surface-to-air missile launch, including the gray cloud escaping from the aircraft, the loss of the aircraft’s right wing or the presence of “small holes in cabin debris“To these elements are added the two loud explosions heard by witnesses to the plane crash.

The official Russian news agency also reported that an investigation had been opened for “violation of flight rules“, suggesting that the plane was in violation. Several sources mention a military zone in the area overflown.
