Investigation Reveals Deception in Czech Supermarkets: The Case of Misleading Meat Content in Prosciutto Crudo Ham

Whoever thinks that Czech supermarkets mean well to him and will only sell him the best possible goods, should regularly follow the reports of the State Agricultural and Food Inspection. It is a more than interesting read, which draws attention to one evil in business chains after another and somehow inadvertently confirms the assumption that the Czech Republic represents the proverbial dustbin of Europe.

There is no meat in the ham

After all, this is perfectly demonstrated by the latest case from Lidl, which is among the most serious. Not because there is any danger due to the consumption of the given food, but because it is already the umpteenth offense of this chain of shops of the same kind. Specifically, the same problems have already been identified in the past with the food in question. This then smacks of systematically deceiving customers.

It is prosciutto crudo ham, which is sold under the private label Italiamo and is among the most expensive sausages in the chain. Therefore, for this price, customers have the right to expect proper quality, but they are not getting it in reality.

The manufacturer stated on the food package: “100 g of ham was made from 194 g of pork leg.” But laboratory analysis confirmed that 100 g of ham was made from only 143 g of meat,” she stated in her reporting Czech Agriculture and Food Inspection Authority. “The consumer was thus provided with misleading information regarding the actual proportion of meat.

It keeps repeating itself

If you are interested in the details, then know that the tested product had a best-by date of October 19, 2023 and the batch was labeled FA2320201. However, this product has had the same problems in the past, so the question is whether it is more the rule than the exception. Of course, SZPI cannot constantly have one specific product tested, although in the case of Lidl it would probably be worth it in some cases. The chain will now be penalized.

The producer of the given ham is the Italian company Filiera Uno Prosciutti Srl. In theory, it is possible to blame everything on it, but it is also necessary to look at other reports about customer deception in Lidl. These are regularly his private label products supplied by various suppliers. The question naturally arises as to what Lidl actually orders from them.
