Gwangmyeong Police Station in Gyeonggi Province arrested Mr. A, a Kia Motors labor union official, on the 1st on charges of collaborating with the company and receiving hundreds of millions in rebates.
According to the police, Mr. A and other unions purchased 28,200 group T-shirts in September last year, saying they would distribute them to union members. In reality, it was 10,300 won per sheet, but it was inflated to look like 15,400 won, and it is alleged that 143 million won was collected from the company through this method.
At the time, the union was found to have spent hundreds of millions of won in strike funds to purchase group T-shirts and distribute them to union members.
However, union members at the time raised suspicions, such as whether they had purchased dead stock products, as they suspected that the material of the T-shirts was cheap and the labels were counterfeit.
Union members protested fiercely, saying things like, “Did you buy trash that looks like a rag? Put it on a dog?” and demanded that the union “disclose the reasonable basis for the price of the T-shirts purchased by the union executive.”
The union also explained that ‘there were some mistakes made by the partner company in the process of making the clothes.’
Union members filed a complaint with the Kookmin Newspaper, and the police began an investigation and booked 11 people, including union members and suppliers.
A police official said, “We were surprised that the union’s fund operation was very unclear,” and added, “We plan to conclude the investigation soon and forward it to the prosecution.”
