Investigation Reveals Alarming Conditions of Bomb Shelters in Ukraine

Only 15 percent of the 4,655 bomb shelters in Kyiv are suitable for shelter. Air raid shelters are also falling short in other parts of Ukraine, according to a government report.

At the beginning of June, three Ukrainians were killed because they could not enter an air raid shelter. President Volodymyr Zelensky then ordered all bomb shelters in the country to be investigated.

The research shows that three-quarters of Ukraine’s bomb shelters are “to some extent” fit for use. At the same time, according to Deputy Prime Minister Denys Shmyha, they do not meet “any standard”. Zelensky called the results of the investigation disappointing on Friday.

Shmyha said the situation is unacceptable in some places. This applies not only to air-raid shelters in Kyiv, but also in the regions of Zaporizhzhia, Sumy and Zhytomyr, among others. Less than half of the shelters in the capital are freely accessible.

According to Zelensky, cities have enough money to tackle the bomb shelters. City officials would have “other priorities”.

Due to the poor condition of the bomb shelters, the government has fired officials in Zhytomyr, Bila Tserkva and Konotop. Four local administrators have also been sent away in the capital. Kyiv mayor Vitali Klitschko was reprimanded for the poor condition of his city’s bomb shelters.
