The Italian public prosecutor’s office has opened an investigation against Placebo singer Brian Molko for insulting Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni.
“Giorgia Meloni, you fascist, racist shit, fuck you”. For these words spoken on July 11 on stage at the “Sonic Park” festival in Stupinigi, near Turin (north), the American-British singer of Placebo Brian Molko is the subject of an investigation by the Italian prosecutor’s office.
Following these insults from the 50-year-old artist against the Italian Prime Minister, several municipalities have since made it known that they would refuse to allow the British group to perform on their territory.
Placebo boycotted by several Italian municipalities
The city of Matera announced that it was withdrawing its subsidies to the same festival which is to relocate there, while the mayor of Sassari (Sardinia) indicated that he would not prevent the group from holding its concert on August 1st.
“The municipality of Sassari does not condemn anyone and does not lecture anyone. If Placebo commits obscene, vulgar acts, they will answer to justice, not to the mayor or to the region,” said Nanni Campus (without label), when Paola Ambrogio, senator from Giorgia Meloni’s party, Fratelli d’Italia, castigated “a slap in the face to Italy and democracy”.
“It’s a delicate case, no comment,” the Turin prosecutor in charge of the investigation told AFP.
Article 290 of the Italian penal code punishes with a fine of 1,000 to 5,000 euros any person who “publicly defames the Republic” but also Parliament, the government, the constitutional council, justice or the army.
