According to the police investigation, several Ukrainian children were standing near the bridge when an unknown man began to complain about them. He told the children to speak Russian and said that Ukraine had started a war. The language the man speaks is not specified.
Prosecutors say the man grabbed a girl by her hair, then grabbed a 10-year-old boy and threw him over the railing into the canal.

The boy hit the iron beams of the bridge, sustaining head and left leg injuries.
In addition, while the boy was thrown into the canal, the unknown assailant also threw a glass bottle at him, which landed on the child’s right shoulder. The unknown assailant then fled.
They are looking for a man who is around 40-45 years old and was wearing a blue T-shirt, a black hat and denim shorts. The Prosecutor General considers the attack to be politically motivated, according to the newspaper “Die Welt”, which, unlike other local media, notes that the attacker spoke Russian.
The attack drew immediate condemnation. Sergei Sumleny, director of the European Center for Resilience, told the Telegraph: “This clearly shows the level of hatred among a certain and large group living in Germany. Many identify themselves with Russia and the Soviet Union – they watch Russian TV and are completely washed up with Russian propaganda.”
“This is the standard level of anti-Ukrainianism you see among Russians, the willingness to hate, cause pain and even kill indiscriminately just because that person speaks Ukrainian.”
Germany has one of the largest ethnic Russian populations outside of Russia in the world, with 3.5 million people in the country claiming to have Russian blood.
Attacks on Ukrainians in Germany have increased dramatically since Russia invaded Ukraine last February.
German support for Ukraine has only grown since the start of the war, angering both ethnic Russians and the German far-right.
Some Ukrainians in Berlin have reported that they have removed all Ukrainian symbols from their clothing for fear of attack.
