Images on Twitter show how the protesters who wanted to prevent the eviction were kicked and beaten by the police. The migrants were also dealt with harshly with tear gas and baton; some of them were thrown out of their tents into the street.
Not only did protesters try to stop the police, but also city councilors, lawyers and members of parliament urged an orderly process on the spot.
Some 450 migrants had recently set up the camp in protest against the forced evacuation of a large migrant camp elsewhere in Paris. Aid organizations accuse the council that no shelter has been arranged for the residents, leaving many homeless.
