The prosecution, which is investigating the suspicion of money envelopes at the Democratic Party of Korea’s national convention, has begun a mandatory investigation again for the first time in five months against former party leader Song Young-gil on charges of illegal donations and bribes.
The 2nd Anti-Corruption Investigation Division of the Seoul Central District Prosecutors’ Office today sent prosecutors and investigators to search and seize former Representative Song’s home in Yongsan-gu, Seoul, and the home of Kim, a former senior expert member of the Democratic Party’s policy committee.
Prosecutors suspect that former CEO Song received a bribe of 40 million won after receiving a request from former Yeosu Chamber of Commerce and Industry Chairman Park Yong-ha for permission to expand a waste incinerator.
Former Chairman Park was previously subject to a search and seizure by the prosecution on suspicion of paying illegal donations worth 300 million won to the Institute for Peace and Livelihood, a support organization outside of former CEO Song.
A prosecution official explained, “We have launched a search and seizure because it has been confirmed that the nature of the illegal political funds is related to quid pro quo,” and, “We are looking at the overall illegal funds that flowed into Song Young-gil’s camp during the national convention.”
Previously, the prosecution searched and seized former Representative Song’s home once in April on suspicion of money envelopes from the Democratic National Convention.
Former Representative Song’s side explained this by saying, “We don’t know what the problematic incinerator is,” and that “Former Chairman of the Prime Minister Park is also a person we don’t know who he is.”
