Investigation into Solingen Arson Attack and Machete Assault Leads to Arrest – Bulgarian Family Tragedy

Nearly two weeks after the devastating fire in Solingen that killed a Bulgarian family with two young children, authorities have uncovered a lead that leads to the alleged perpetrator.

Attack with a machete

A 40-year-old man was attacked and injured with a machete in Solingen on Monday. As a suspect in this crime, the police detained a 39-year-old man, who is also believed to be connected to the arson in Solingen. Two weeks ago, a man and a woman, aged 28 and 29, and their two children, aged about 3 years and five months, died in the fire that engulfed an old building in the city. The family from Bulgaria had not been able to leave the burning building because the wooden stairs had already been engulfed by the fire.

The prosecutor’s office is investigating on suspicion of intentional murder, and the examination showed that there were traces of an incendiary substance acting as an accelerant in the entrance of the building.

Conflict with the landlord

According to new data from the prosecutor’s office, informed by ARD, the suspect was previously a tenant in a building located in the backyard of the burned house, but his contract was terminated because he did not pay rent regularly. There was a conflict between the man and his landlady and it is believed that the fire was intended as revenge against her. According to the investigators, so far there are no clues that it could be a crime with xenophobic motives.

The authorities tracked down the alleged perpetrator after analyzing footage from video cameras and based on information from the landlord. An arrest warrant has been issued for the man on a charge of attempted murder. The same person is known to the law enforcement authorities – there have been charges against him for misuse of money and retail theft, said the prosecutor’s office in Wuppertal.
