Investigation into Small Violent Groups during Demonstrations: Lessons Learned from Sainte-Soline

A parliamentary commission is conducting an investigation into small violent groups during the demonstrations. In addition to their hearings at the National Assembly, these deputies also went to the field a few weeks ago to meet the gendarmes and farmers of Deux-Sèvres.

What security or other lessons can we learn from Sainte-Soline? Parliamentarians continue their hearings at the National Assembly. In turn, the Minister of the Interior, Gérald Darmanin, took part in the exercise. From his point of view, the violence of the demonstrators has eclipsed the substantive debate.

For some of the violent demonstrations, premeditation was characterized, and it would be good to recognize this, because the often noble cause that the demonstrators defend, whoever they are, in any case respectable, is obviously disrupted by violence. of a group that is not the majority.

For their part, the spokespersons for the Earth Uprisings, summoned on several occasions, offered to respond in writing. 18 questions were thus sent to them, and according to them, a large majority relate to facts subject to prosecution.

In their press release, they denounce a commission of inquiry which exceeds its functions: “Pursuant to Article 6 of Ordinance No. 58-1100 of November 17, 1958 relating to the functioning of parliamentary assemblies, and in compliance with the principle of the separation of judicial authority and other powers, the committees of parliamentary inquiries cannot investigate facts which are the subject of ongoing legal proceedings.”

They also believe that the deputies of this committee are pursuing political objectives: “Its creation the day after Sainte-Soline by the Republicans, the Rassemblement National et Renaissance aims to write an alternative and “legitimate” history of the Sainte-Soline demonstration”.

The president of the parliamentary commission of inquiry announced that he would contact the Paris prosecutor to force them to appear. One more legal meeting which will thicken the numerous legal files linked to the events of Sainte-Soline in particular and to irrigation reserves in general.
