An extensive investigation is underway into the deadly attack on a POW camp in Russian-occupied territory in Ukraine. UN chief António Guterres has made the announcement.

Moscow and Kiev hold each other responsible for a war crime last week in Olenivka. It is still unclear what happened in the POW camp, but 50 Ukrainian detainees are said to have died. The Red Cross has still not been able to visit the site of the massacre.

Ukraine and Russia have asked the UN for an investigation. But the two parties have yet to agree on the conditions for this, Guterres explains. Preliminary talks on this are still ongoing.

Rocket or explosion from within?

In the attack Friday morning, the Ukrainian army, according to Russia and pro-Russian rebels, bombarded a barrack with prisoners of war with rockets. About fifty detainees lost their lives and dozens were injured, according to the Russian Ministry of Defense.

But according to Kiev, the Ukrainians drove into the barracks and were killed a day later by an explosion from within. According to Ukraine, this can be deduced from satellite images. The forces killed largely came from the Azov battalion, which was designated by Russia as terrorist organization has been labeled.

Russia said shortly after the attack that the Red Cross and the UN are welcome to visit the camp. But that’s not true, according to the Red Cross. It has not even been allowed to provide aid to the victims, writes the organization on its websitedespite repeated requests to do so.
