The death of a Hispanic mother of Dominican origin continues to be investigated in Brooklyn as a case of homicide-suicide. Luz Maribel Espinal, 43, was murdered on February 16, shot in the head.
His death occurred inside an apartment located in Cypress Hill. One of the victim’s children called the police authorities when he saw that he was not answering the phone. He didn’t answer the door either, but upon entering through a window, he found the body of his mother.
Next to her was also the body of her boyfriend for just a few months. He allegedly killed her and then shot himself in the head.
“He didn’t say hello, he was antisocial”
Our reporter Rolman Vergara, from Univision 41, spoke with a neighbor of Luz Maribel Espinal, who asked not to be identified for protection.
The man described the Dominican mother as a “very happy and very happy woman. She lived here for many years” (…) “We are very sorry for the death of this girl, she did not deserve that.”
However, she did not have the same words for the man who allegedly murdered her. “She didn’t say hello and I declare it as someone who was antisocial,” said the neighbor. “He was a pretty strange person,” he added.
So far, authorities have not revealed the man’s identity.
Other neighbors pointed out that Luz Maribel Espinal’s boyfriend was very controlling, that he had even forced her to delete her social networks.
Before her tragic death, the Dominican mother was happy because she had recently become a grandmother. She had ordered a cake to celebrate the family event, her son detailed. It was learned that she had another older son and a 7-year-old daughter.
Although the authorities are investigating the case as a homicide-suicide, the forensic medicine will be in charge of determining the definitive causes of death.
Identify signs of abuse
“During the beginning of a relationship, it is not always easy to know if it will later become an abusive relationship. In fact, many abusive people seem like the ideal partner during the early stages of the relationship. Possessive and controlling behaviors do not always emerge overnight and can manifest and intensify as the relationship progresses.”
Some signs of abuse in a relationship are:
- Tell him that he never does anything right.
- Showing excessive jealousy about the time he spends separately with his friends.
- Prevent or discourage you from spending time with friends, family or colleagues.
- Insults, demeans, or embarrasses you, especially in front of other people.
- Prevent you from making your own decisions, including about work or school.
- Control the household finances without discussing it, including taking your money or refusing to contribute to necessary expenses.
- Pressure you to have sex or perform sexual acts that you are not comfortable with.
- Pressure you to use drugs or alcohol.
- Intimidate him with threatening looks or actions.
- Degrading the way you raise your children or threatening to harm them or take away their children or pets.
- Intimidate you with firearms, knives, bats, pepper spray or other types of weapons.
- Destroy your belongings or your home.
