Investigation into Collusion in Lee Jae-myeong Attack Case: Arrest Made and Personal Information Disclosure Committee Meeting Scheduled

Investigation into collusion… The person involved was the person who attacked his wife, who carried a weapon a day ago, and the face and name disclosure committee was held today.

A man who helped commit the crime of Mr. Kim (67), who was arrested on charges of attacking Lee Jae-myeong, leader of the Democratic Party of Korea, with a weapon was arrested by the police.

The Busan Police Agency Investigation Headquarters announced on the 8th that it was investigating A, a man in his 70s, in Asan, South Chungcheong Province, on the afternoon of the 7th on charges of aiding and abetting attempted murder. The police found out that Mr. A had promised to send by mail the contents of an 8-page document containing the motive for Mr. Kim’s crime. It is known that the ‘remarks’ that Mr. Kim had in his coat pocket at the time of the crime contained expressions of hatred toward Representative Lee and criticism of the political world.

The police believe that Mr. A knew that Mr. Kim planned to kill CEO Lee, but helped him without reporting it. A police official said, “We are investigating whether Mr. A conspired with Mr. Kim to commit the crime, whether Mr. A sent this content, and where he intended to send it.” Mr. A is said to have denied the charges.

The police investigation revealed that Mr. Kim had been walking around with a weapon the day before he attacked CEO Lee on the 2nd. According to the police, Mr. Kim visited the site with a weapon while Representative Lee was visiting the grave of former President Roh Moo-hyun in Bongha Village, Gimhae, Gyeongsangnam-do on the 1st. It was found that Mr. Kim purchased a weapon online in April of last year and sharpened the blade with a knife sharpener before committing the crime.

Mr. Kim’s movements were also revealed. Mr. Kim departed Cheonan Asan Station by high-speed rail (KTX) on the morning of the 1st and arrived at Busan Station around 10:40 am. Afterwards, he took a taxi and arrived at Bongha Village at around 11:50 am, then got a private car and visited Pyeongsan Village in Yangsan, Gyeongsangnam-do at around 4 pm. He then returned from Ulsan Station to Busan Station, took the subway and taxi alternately, and arrived at the Gadeokdo Daehang Observatory around 7:50 pm. It was discovered that Mr. Kim arrived at a motel in Jinhae-gu, Changwon-si, Gyeongsangnam-do by car, stayed there, and then took a taxi to Gadeokdo Island around 8 a.m. the next day. A police official said, “No evidence of accomplices was found among those who gave Mr. Kim a ride.” The police will hold a Personal Information Disclosure Deliberation Committee (Personal Information Disclosure Committee) meeting on the 9th to decide whether to disclose Mr. Kim’s face and name.

On the 8th, Democratic Party members of the National Assembly Public Administration and Security Committee summoned National Police Agency Commissioner Yoon Hee-geun to receive a report on pending issues related to the attack on CEO Lee Jae-myung and urged a thorough investigation. Representative Lee Hae-sik of the Democratic Party pointed out, “It is unprecedented for a crime to be committed targeting the life of an opposition party leader after the assassinations of Kim Gu and Yeo Woon-hyung,” adding, “The public has many questions, including whether there is someone behind it.” The National Police Agency plans to use this incident as an opportunity to begin enacting the ‘Security Act’.
