The PowNed journalists who were attacked on Ameland on December 5 have not yet been heard by the police. According to broadcaster Dominique Weesie, the car that was rammed during the chase has not yet been investigated.

The journalists wanted to make recordings during the Sunneklaas celebration, an alternative Sinterklaas celebration that is celebrated on the island on December 5. In general, the celebrants do not allow outsiders and do not share details about the content of the party.

A group of between twenty and thirty islanders chased the journalists and crashed their car. A report has now been filed by both PowNed and the islanders.

According to Weesie, the beleaguered reporters have not yet been contacted or heard by the police. The broadcaster finds this “very striking”. “I don’t know how long such an investigation normally takes, but these seem like fairly obvious steps to me.”

PowNed has now submitted a complaint to the Public Prosecution Service about the progress of the investigation. The broadcaster’s lawyer writes in a letter that the police have done little or no investigation, “despite the seriousness of the facts”. “We fear that the investigation has not gotten off the ground.”

‘It is not normal to assault journalists’

Journalists’ union NVJ also believes that “this investigation should be given priority,” says secretary Thomas Bruning. “From the very first moment, the police did not act expeditiously. After the incident, no license plates were recorded, no report was recorded. It is bizarre that a week after it happened in such a small community as Ameland At least a few suspects can be identified.”

Bruning is also disappointed in the mayor of Ameland, Leo Pieter Stoel. “It is not normal to attack journalists. It is very important that the mayor makes this very clear to his residents. It is a very bad thing that he does not do this and does not even give interviews about the issue.”

The Northern Netherlands police have not yet said anything about the ongoing investigation. “We want to do it carefully,” says a spokesperson.
