Investigating Mysterious Hepatitis in Children Expands, CDC Urges Doctors to Be Alert

Jakarta

The United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) issued an advisory for doctors to be aware of cases of mysterious hepatitis in children. This appeal came after the World Health Organization (WHO) highlighted various countries that reported dozens of cases of children experiencing hepatitis for no apparent reason.

This case is said to be mysterious because the children had hepatitis not because of infection with the hepatitis A, B, C, D, or E viruses. Initial suspicions led to a virus called adenovirus, which has been known to only cause symptoms of the common cold.

British health authorities report that at least 108 cases of mysterious hepatitis in children have been found. Similar cases have also been found in other European countries, ranging from Spain, Denmark, Ireland, and the Netherlands.

The CDC urges doctors in the United States (US) to report all suspected cases to the local health department. Doctors are advised to check for adenovirus in children who have symptoms of fever, fatigue, loss of appetite, nausea, vomiting, stomach pain, dark urine, light-colored stools, joint pain, and jaundice.

“A possible association between pediatric hepatitis and adenovirus infection is currently being investigated,” the CDC wrote.
