Investigating criminal networks in the fishing industry in Northern Norway

Five people have been arrested and charged with gross tax evasion or complicity in this in a coordinated action in Alta and Vilnius.

On 13 December, the Nordland police district in collaboration with Økokrim, the Finnmark police district and the Lithuanian Financial Crime Investigation Service (FCIS/FNTT) campaigned against a staffing network that the police suspect has been involved in extensive tax fraud in connection with the hiring of labor for fishing farms in northern Norway.

This is stated by the police in Nordland in a press release.

A total of five people were arrested in the coordinated actions that took place in Alta and Vilnius.

It concerns four men and one woman.

– They are charged with serious tax fraud or complicity in this, says police attorney Cecilie Øiesvold in a press release.

A Norwegian citizen has been detained in Lithuania and requested to be handed over to Norway.

– Following the checks, the Nordland police district has 13 criminal cases under investigation related to 10 Lithuanian companies and one Norwegian company, which the police believe are part of the criminal network, according to Øiesvold.

Nine addresses were searched in the coordinated action. The police have seized both physical and digital assets.

– A total of 15 people involved were questioned. A Norwegian citizen has been detained in Lithuania and requested to be handed over to Norway, writes Øiesvold in the press release.

The action has its origins in checks carried out by the a-crime center in Nordland in 2019.

According to Eurojust, the tax fraud must have corresponded to an amount of around NOK eight million.
